After a woman becomes pregnant, until the month of delivery, the Qi mechanism of the Zang-Fu organs is congested, and the joints are not flexible. She must not sleep too much; she needs to walk frequently. She should avoid eating sticky, hard, or indigestible foods, must not drink alcohol excessively, must not take medicines randomly, and must not undergo acupuncture or moxibustion arbitrarily. She must keep her mind broad and reduce worries, and must not carry heavy loads.
It is also said: Although childbirth involves taboos against defilement, the sequence of preparations must be prioritized. On the first day of entering the due month, paste the birth chart, the location of the daily wandering fetal killing stars, and the method of borrowing land on the north wall of the pregnant woman's room. Set up bed curtains according to the orientation, lay thick mats and bedding, ensuring they are tight and without gaps. Even in summer, lay thick straw reeds, and prepare thin gauze curtains treated with good oil for protection. Burn incense regularly to maintain cleanliness. Prepare decoctions, medicines, and utensils. Once labor is imminent, there must be no noise, crowd, or panic, which could startle the parturient. One should pre-select one elderly and experienced midwife, along with one or two steady women accustomed to assisting in childbirth, to support her. Do not act recklessly, lest the parturient become anxious and frightened. Also, taboo idle outsiders and those involved in mourning or defilement from viewing. Startling the mother may cause premature labor. If the midwife is incompetent and fails to assess the fetal Qi, intervening as soon as the fetal Qi begins to move, thinking labor has started, and interfering in many ways, startling the mother and causing prematurity, the danger of malpresentation (transverse or breech) will arise from this. The *Baobao Fang* states: If a pregnant woman feels abdominal pain but not significant lower back pain, labor has not yet begun. Let her walk while supported and endure it. If she cannot walk, lean on an object to stand. If she can walk, let her walk. Or if the amniotic fluid breaks first, then contractions begin. If abdominal pain is accompanied by a sensation of fire in the eyes, this indicates the fetus has separated from the Kidney channel and is pressing against the birth canal. Immediately administer one or two doses of medicine, then help her lie on the birthing mat. Do not push too early. Ensure the parturient conserves strength and regulates her breathing. The midwife should explain this beforehand. If she feels mental restlessness, take one spoonful of white honey mixed with fresh well water. If hungry, eat a small amount of soft rice or porridge. Keep these prepared so she does not become hungry or thirsty, fearing weakness and exhaustion. If not hungry or thirsty, do not force food. Childbirth has its own timing; do not forcibly administer催产 (inducing) or slippery-pregnancy drugs. Only use them if necessary due to premature pushing. Taking them unnecessarily may cause other diseases; this must be avoided. If pregnancy reaches ten months, the form is complete, and consciousness is ready, and Qi moves towards delivery, slippery-pregnancy decoctions may be taken. Women entering the due month must not wash their hair, as cold Qi may flow into the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel, often causing the fetus to be transverse or difficult to deliver. Take heed, take heed.
Conception involves Yin nourishing and Yang generating; Creation has already determined the fate. How can human effort intervene? I have heard some consult fortune-telling books to determine auspicious or inauspicious times and clashes. At the time of delivery, privately believing the time is unfavorable, they prevent the woman from pushing. Suddenly, when the fetus turns, they consider it a good time and rush the delivery, aiming to welcome the good time and avoid the bad. They fail to realize that forcing labor before the proper time causes distress and pressure, making the mother unable to bear the pain and risking her life. Just as destroying the nest breaks the eggs, or losing the palm makes the fingers irrelevant. Those who judge by fortune-telling books may feel remorse, but it is too late. Those who die due to such practices can only accept their misfortune. Alas! Generally, although pregnancy lasts ten months, some deliver at seven or eight months, while others go past the due date. For example, Yao's mother was pregnant for fourteen months, reflecting differences in the mother's Qi and Blood constitution. This aligns with the concept in fortune-telling that the Five Elements should be self-sufficient without relying on the fetal origin. Day and night consist of twelve double-hours, divided into one hundred ke. Human breaths number thirteen thousand five hundred. Between breaths, wisdom and foolishness are determined. How can one manipulate the timing to avoid poverty and seize wealth? However, fortune-telling books state: In childhood, when fortune and misfortune have not yet manifested, one should observe signs to verify future events. Even for the born, predicting future outcomes is difficult; how can one predict the gender or status of an unborn child based on auspicious timing? If one succeeds, it implies control over Creation rather than being subject to it. Those fond of fortune-telling should understand the limits of Creation and the principles of Heaven and Earth's expansion and contraction, avoiding prejudice that leads to wrongful death. Have you not heard of poor women who survive hardship and achieve health? Without external obstruction, they follow nature. Now, if one heeds sincere advice and avoids these practices, or dismisses them as madness and lets nature take its course, listeners should still tremble with fear. What about the mother and child? Those who engage in such practices may later realize they died unnaturally, having incurred the sin of killing, and divine retribution is inevitable. I deeply reflect that grace arises from harm, but if grace does not arise, harm comes first. Oh, how terrifying!
For nursing mothers, the "Fan Zhi" month is taboo. If this month occurs, sit on ash spread over cowhide, preventing blood and foul matter from touching the ground. Washclothes water should be collected in vessels. This taboo ends after the month.
If childbirth does not follow the birth chart and taboos are violated, both mother and child may die. If not fatal, both may fall ill, and all matters may go awry. If the chart is followed without violation, the mother remains healthy, and the child is easy to raise.
When labor approaches, avoid having many people watch. Only allow two or three people nearby. Inform others only after delivery is complete. A crowd watching may lead to dystocia.
The parturient must not be rushed. Bystanders must be steady and prudent, avoiding haste or anxiety. Anxiety leads to difficult labor. If abdominal pain is accompanied by a burning sensation in the eyes, the fetus is turning and not yet ready to be born. After birth, everyone, including the mother, should avoid asking whether the baby is male or female. Immediately upon birth, remove any foul matter from the mouth and give five he of fresh well water. Avoid warm liquids. Do not let the mother view foul substances.
Parturients must avoid hot medicines and wheat-based foods. Diet should be lukewarm, similar to body temperature.
It is also said that the Fetal God occupies different directions each month, and construction should be avoided. January: Bed. February: Doorway. March: Gate. April: Stove. May: Body. June: Stove. July: Room. August: Toilet. September: Gate. October: Doorway. November: Body. December: Bed. The delivery room in the final month should be wind-free and not too warm. Warmth generates wind; sweating opens the pores, leading to wind-stroke, coma, and unconsciousness. Immediately administer Yufeng San (Wind-Resolving Powder), followed by Jiaojiao San (Crossing Powder). After taking, scratch the head with the right hand. Dazhou Zisu Tang (Soybean and Perilla Decoction) or Duhuo Tang (Angelica Pubescens Decoction) are also suitable.
Midwives harming the fetus: When a woman is in labor, three midwives are summoned. Two pull the woman's arms vigorously, while one presses her head against her abdomen and pulls her waist with both hands, exerting great force. The fetus dies in the womb and is expelled slowly, appearing bloody. This is murder by the midwives. Why not wait for the melon to ripen and fall naturally? This practice severs meridians, causing abdominal pain like knife stabs, extreme thirst, urinary retention, dry mouth and tongue, blackened teeth, foul odor, inability to eat or drink, and delirium nearing death. First, allow drinking ice water freely, about two sheng. When pain subsides and thirst stops, administer Zhouche Wan (Boat Cart Pill) and Tongjing San (Meridian-Unblocking Powder). After five or six doses, resulting in numerous bowel movements, appetite returns. Then regulate with Guiling Ganlu San (Cassia, Poria, and Sweet Dew Powder), Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder), or Chaihu Yinzi (Bupleurum Drink) to restore peace.
Another case: A woman suffered a similar condition. Quickly obtain a scale hook attached to a strong rope, coat the hook with ointment. Have the mother sit with feet outward. Assistants stand on either side. Hook the dead fetus and command a strong woman to grit her teeth and pull the dead fetus out, expelling five to seven sheng of necrotic blood. The mother fell into unconsciousness.
For pregnant women experiencing thirst and craving water, drinking rice water is better.

Upon entering the due month, parturients must absolutely not drink alcohol, fearing mental confusion at delivery. Do not be startled. Do not order people around before labor. Do not eat alcohol. No guests staying overnight before the due month. Preparations made before the "Shangsi" festival are quite detailed. Regarding urgent matters, nothing surpasses this. Those who understand will verify its importance.

[Pre-delivery Protection Method]
According to various obstetric theories: Parturients entering the due month must avoid alcohol. Mental confusion occurs during delivery. At the onset of labor, bystanders must not make noise or rush. Fear of startling the mother. Only allow experienced, steady, cautious, and intimate midwives (two or three) to support the mother. Initially feeling abdominal pain, sit or lie down as desired, and eat/drink moderately to prevent weakness at delivery. If pain increases, endure it patiently. Gradually administer Slippery-Pregnancy Yubai Pi San, one or two doses. Do not take medicine too early; wait for the right time. Bystanders must not pressure her. Have someone support her to walk slowly. If walking is difficult, lean on an object. Rest, then walk again. Until pain radiates to the waist and contractions become frequent, take one dose of Cuisheng Dan. Continue supporting walking. If contractions intensify and standing/walking is difficult, recognize labor is imminent. Take Cuisheng Fu, then calmly ascend the birthing mat. Do not push too early. If too early, the fetus cannot turn in the womb. Carefully assess until the fetus presses to be born, then embrace the waist. The person embracing the waist must not tilt, allowing the fetus to follow natural laws for easy delivery. Some deliver lying down. Lie flat on the mat, back straight, body not curved, so the fetus does not lose its path. Failure to follow this leads to dystocia. Even if spared, other diseases may arise.
[Post-delivery Protection Method]
According to classics: Women need not only worry during delivery but also postpartum care. Do not indulge in desires after delivery, thinking nothing happened. Violations, though slight as autumn hairs, cause illness heavier than Mount Song. Immediately after delivery, avoid asking gender or checking blood loss. Administer hemostatic medicines according to symptoms. After a while, eat porridge and take Sishun Lizhong Wan. Have someone massage from the heart area down to the navel and abdomen, five to seven times daily. If disease symptoms appear, treat accordingly. Alternate porridge and medicine, drinking frequently. Sit with eyes closed, leaning back on objects, shoulders supported. Keep knees upright. Even when sleeping, wake frequently. Wait one double-hour before getting into bed. Raise knees high. Place thick mattresses at the head of the bed, surround on four sides, seal gaps to ward off "thief wind" (pathogenic wind). Within one lunar month, constantly burn vinegar smoke to prevent dizziness and stuffiness. After one lunar month, gradually add flavor. Cook mutton or hen to make thick broth porridge. Until one hundred days, regularly take Danggui Wan, Danggui Jianzhong Tang, and Sishun Lizhong Wan, one qian each daily, to nourish Zang-Fu Qi and replenish Blood vessels. After two lunar months, consume soft meat. Within the full month, especially avoid arbitrary diet, exposure to wind-cold, emotional extremes, combing hair, exerting force, shouting, labor, skilled work, and using the toilet. Such regulation continues for one hundred days, until Qi and Blood harmonize and Zang-Fu recover. Failure to follow this results in postpartum residual diseases.
