When a pregnant woman experiences dizziness, blurred vision, inability to see clearly, and swelling with nodules in the cheeks and neck, it is generally due to fetal qi injuring the Liver, with heat-toxin attacking upwards. Symptoms include pain in the temporal region (Taiyang acupoint area), vomiting and regurgitation, stiffness and tension in the back and neck, leading to visual vertigo and photopsia (seeing spots). If accompanied by phlegm-fluid retention, the condition is critical and life-threatening within moments. One should urgently decoct and administer Xiaofeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder).
Formula:
Xiaofeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder): Treats pregnancy complicated by Liver heat-toxin attacking the temporal region, phlegm-fluid retention in the chest and diaphragm, dizziness, blurred vision, inability to see, and swelling with nodules in the cheeks and neck.
Ingredients: Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Gan Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Chuan Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dadou Huangjuan (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 1 liang); Gancao (Licorice Root), roasted (half 1 liang).
Usage: Coarsely crush the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water and half a qian of good tea, decoct until reduced to 0.8 sheng, strain, and take orally while warm.
Postprandial Case:
Previously, a pregnant woman nearing delivery suddenly lost sight in both eyes, unable to even see lamp light. She suffered from headache, vertigo, and fullness/swelling in the neck and cheeks, rendering her unable to turn her neck. Medical treatment failed, and her condition worsened to a critical state. After taking this formula, she stabilized and delivered safely. Later, her eyelids drooped, and she could not recognize people. She took Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), alternating with Tianmendong Yinzi (Asparagi Decoction). Her vision gradually improved slightly. Strict dietary taboos are required: avoid alcohol, wheat products, fried/roasted foods, chicken, mutton, goose, duck, tofu, and spicy foods; avoid all toxic foods. Sexual intercourse must be avoided. The medicine should be taken slightly warm.
Tianmendong Yinzi (Asparagi Decoction): Treats pregnancy complicated by wind-heat in the Liver meridian attacking the eyes, causing ptosis and blindness.
Ingredients: Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Chongweizi (Ecliptae Fructus) (each 1 liang); Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (half 1 liang); Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Fuling (Poria), Chuan Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 7.5 qian).
Usage: Coarsely crush the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water and three slices of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to 0.8 sheng, strain, and take warm after meals. Avoid fried/roasted, spicy, and toxic foods, as well as medicines that are too warm. If this is not followed, vision will not recover. Even if taken for three to five months, or up to half a year or a year, if vision does not return, the patient will ultimately become blind. This condition arises because during pregnancy, women often stay in closed rooms or attics with fire stoves, wearing thick clothes and heavy blankets, trapping heat inside; or they take tonifying medicines and consume excessive hot-natured foods, causing extreme stagnation of fetal heat and Liver heat, allowing wind to rush into the brain.
Xiegan San (Liver-Purging Powder): Treats pregnant women near term who suddenly lose sight in both eyes, cannot see lamp light, suffer from headache and vertigo, and have swelling/fullness in the neck and cheeks, making neck movement impossible.
Ingredients: Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (1 liang); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (these four each half 1 liang); Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (these two each 5.5 qian).
Usage: Grind into powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 sheng of water, decoct until reduced to 0.8 sheng, and take warm after meals. Although this formula is not intended for treating difficult labor, it is included because later generations encountering this condition may not understand the pathology, mistakenly taking tonics and toxic foods, violating taboos, and losing their precious health. Is this not regrettable? Hence, it is appended here.
Xiaofeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder): What is the cause of dizziness, blurred vision, and swelling with nodules in the cheeks and neck during pregnancy? The answer is: It is generally due to fetal qi injuring the Liver, with toxic qi attacking upwards, causing pain in the temporal region, vomiting, and stiffness/tension in the back and neck, leading to visual vertigo and photopsia. If accompanied by phlegm-fluid retention, the condition is critical within moments. One should urgently decoct and take this formula.
Ingredients: Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Shan Yinchén (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Luofen (Concha Ostreae) (these six each 2 qian); Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Gancao (Licorice Root) (these four each 2 qian); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each half 1 qian). Total weight 1.5 liang. Cut into six doses. For each dose, use 1 sheng of water and half a qian of good tea, decoct until reduced to 0.8 sheng, and take orally while warm. Recovery occurs when slight sweating appears on the head.
