Background Information:
Book: Puji Fang (Universal Effective Prescriptions); Author: Zhu Zi; Dynasty: Ming Dynasty, Yongle 4th Year; Chapter: General Discussion (4/5); Category: Formulas.
Yellow Lead Oxide (half jin), Sesame Oil (one jin), Sophora Root (Shandongou, remove shells, 75 pieces), Myrrh, Frankincense, Bischofite (Mubiezi), Costus Root (Muxiang, each two qian, powdered). First, remove the shell of the Bischofite seeds and take the kernels, then chop them finely. Place them together with Shandongou in a pot. Boil using alternating mild and strong heat until the mixture turns black. Remove the residue using a strainer. Then add Yellow Lead Oxide. Immediately stir three thousand times to the left with a willow branch. Next, add the powders of Frankincense, Myrrh, and Costus Root. Stir again until uniform. Wait for the appropriate consistency, remove the "fire toxicity," and store when cool. Apply as needed by spreading it on the affected area.
Shenyi Gao (Divine Miracle Plaster): Treats carbuncles, sores, various swellings, and malignant ulcers, whether suppurated or not.
Ghost-faced Aconite (keep skin and tips), Bischofite seeds (remove shell but keep oil), Angelica Sinensis (remove rhizome), Fritillaria, Arisaema, Pinellia (each one liang), Angelica Dahurica, Atractylodes Macrocephala (each half liang). Grind the above ingredients into coarse powder. Soak in six liang of authentic sesame oil; the longer the better. Decoct the medicine until it turns reddish-black. Filter the residue through cotton cloth. Decoct the oil for three to five boils. Add two liang of Yellow Lead Oxide. Stir with peach or willow branches, adding gradually until the color becomes black. Store in jars or bottles during spring, summer, and autumn. Spread on leather paper for application, leaving edges blank.
Xionghuang Gao (Realgar Plaster): Treats carbuncles, sores, and malignant ulcers. Promotes tissue regeneration, draws out pus, expels toxic vapors, corrodes necrotic flesh, and removes dead tissue.
Realgar (finely ground, half liang), Sesame Oil (seven liang), Cinnabar (finely ground), Litharge (ground, half liang each), Lead Oxide (three liang), Beeswax (one liang), Snake Gallstone (half liang, quenched in vinegar seven times and ground to powder), Oyster Shell (three fen, separately ground). Grind and mix all ingredients evenly. First, boil the oil until bubbling, then add beeswax until completely melted. Next, add the lead compounds. Stir with a bamboo whisk until the mixture turns black. Add the various powdered medicines and stir evenly. Test by dropping into water; it should form beads. Store in porcelain boxes. Apply to old silk fabric and stick to the affected area. Change twice daily.
Plaster Formula: Treats all toxic sores and swellings.
Bischofite Kernels, Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi), Croton Seeds (five kernels), Angelica Dahurica, Genkwa Flower (if Calamine is unavailable, substitute with other herbs), Yellow Lead Oxide, White Pine Rosin, Sesame Oil. Grind the above ingredients into powder. First, decoct the first five ingredients in oil until reddish. Filter out the residue. Add the lead oxide and pine rosin and continue boiling until no oily droplets remain and it does not stick to the hands.
Huangbai Gao (Phellodendron Plaster): Treats all malignant sores and swellings.
Phellodendron Bark (two liang), Coptis Rhizome (two liang), Rheum Palmatum, Scutellaria Root, Pangolin Scales, Bischofite seeds (shelled, each two liang), Locust Branches (four liang), Yellow Lead Oxide (one jin). Grind into coarse powder. Soak in two jin of sesame oil for three nights. Decoct over warm fire until the pangolin scales turn scorched yellow. Filter out the residue. Sprinkle the Yellow Lead Oxide into the oil. Wait until it is about to boil again, then remove from heat. Stir frequently to ensure even mixing, also using locust branches. Test by dropping into water; it should not disperse.
Chishao Gao (Red Peony Plaster): Treats back carbuncles (Fabei) and various malignant sores and ding sores.
Red Peony Root (five qian), Castor Seeds (sixty pieces), Pig Hemp Seeds, Croton Seeds (sixty pieces), Angelica Sinensis (five qian), Weeping Willow Branches (seven branches, each three cun long), Yellow Lead Oxide (four liang), Sesame Oil (eight liang). Decoct the ingredients in sesame oil using alternating mild and strong heat, lifting and lowering the pot three times. Filter out the residue. Then add the Yellow Lead Oxide and stir continuously with a willow branch. Test by dropping into water until it does not disperse. Increase oil amount in winter. Use six liang of oil in summer. For internal carbuncles or intestinal abscesses, make this into pills. Take with rice water to purge foul matter.
Plaster Formula: Treats various malignant toxic sores.
Realgar (two and a half qian), Yellow Lead Oxide (one liang), Old Pine Resin, Calomel (one qian), Dragon Bone (two qian), Frankincense (one and a half qian), Dalbergia Odorifera (Lignum Dalbergiae Odoriferae, two qian), Croton Seeds (two and a half qian, or use two pieces). Decoct the powders in two and a half liang of sesame oil. Decoct the croton seeds until they turn yellowish-black. Add pine resin, then add the lead oxide. Form into a plaster and add Realgar etc. for application. If the sore is unbroken, crush one shelled croton seed and place it in the center of the plaster before applying to the lesion.
Shenyi Gao (Divine Miracle Plaster): Treats carbuncles, back carbuncles, and malignant toxic sores/furuncles. Effects are miraculous.
Heishen (Black Ginseng/Shen), Angelica Dahurica, Honeycomb, Apricot Kernels, Bischofite Kernels, Male Hair (washed and dried, two qian each), Snake Slough, Fat White Croton Seeds (fifteen pieces). Cut finely. Soak in five liang of hemp oil overnight in a clay crucible. Decoct slowly over low heat. Stir with changing willow branches. When the medicine is scorched and slightly cooled, filter through raw silk. Return to the crucible. Slowly add two liang of pure Guo Dan (refined lead oxide). Stir rapidly with a willow branch until black. Drop into water to form beads. Mix in two qian of Frankincense powder. Pour into porcelain. After solidifying, invert on mud for three days. Apply.
Shenyi Gao (Divine Miracle Plaster): Treats back carbuncles, sores, and various malignant toxic sores/furuncles. Effects are miraculous. For treating gangrene, first apply Maifan Shi Gao (Maifan Stone Plaster). Once the base of the sore has receded to a diameter of only one cun, apply Shenyi Gao to promote healing. The efficacy depends on the depth of the disease. During preparation, do not let women, chickens, dogs, cats, or filthy objects see it.
Cleaned Honeycomb (two liang, those with larvae are best), Scrophularia Root (remove rhizome, half liang), Astragalus (remove rhizome, three fen), Whole Snake Slough (washed in salt water and dried, half liang), Yellow Lead Oxide (sifted fine, five liang), Apricot Kernels (skin and tips removed, cut, one liang), Authentic Hemp Oil (one jin), Men's Loose Hair (washed, processed, and dried). Put hemp oil in a silver crucible. Simmer slowly with the hair until scorched and melted. Add apricot kernels. When black, filter through good cotton. Return the clear oil to the crucible. Add Astragalus and Scrophularia. Simmer slowly for one to two hours. Remove from heat and place on a cold stove for half an hour to let the fire subside. Add Honeycomb and Snake Slough. Stir rapidly with a willow branch. Move back to the fire. Stir constantly. Simmer slowly until purple-yellow. Filter through cotton. Return the clear oil to the crucible. While cold, add Yellow Lead Oxide and stir rapidly for a moment. Move back to the fire. Simmer with mild heat. Stir constantly with a willow branch for over a thousand turns. When the oil turns black and forms beads in clean water, the plaster is ready. If beads are sparse, simmer a little longer. Ensure proper consistency. Seal in porcelain for storage. If accidentally overheated and too hard to use, melt some wax into sesame oil, store in porcelain, cover, steam over a steamer, stir while hot, and store. Must place the porcelain container in clean water to remove fire toxicity for one day and night. Rest for three days before use. Change twice daily, once at night. Controlling the heat is extremely difficult. Observe the intensity carefully. If too fierce, the medicine loses its properties and may burn the face and eyes, making rescue impossible. Be extremely cautious. There are dozens of plaster formulas. None are more effective for gangrene than this one. Not for sale even for a thousand gold. Especially effective for beating injuries.
Jinsi Gao (Golden Thread Plaster): Treats various sores.

If painful, administer the pill via a locust twig. Then place bird droppings in the wound to adhere. If the sore hurts, stop; no need for more medicine. If there is no blood after puncturing, it is a bone-penetrating ding sore. Prick the middle fingernail of the left hand for men or right hand for women. If still no blood, prick the big toenail to draw blood. Smear the blood onto the pellet and insert it into the wound for effect. If there is absolutely no blood, the condition is likely incurable and fatal. However, you can use two jin of sesame oil, one jin of Yellow Lead Oxide, and four hundred and eighty white Croton Seeds. Cook the oil in a copper pot. Add twenty peach branches and decoct until dry, then remove. Add twenty two-cun long willow branches and decoct until dry, then remove.
