In the past, Song Dynasty physician Chu Cheng created special formulas for nuns and widows, which had meaning. These two groups live in celibacy, possessing only Yin without Yang. When desire arises but is often unfulfilled, Yin and Yang contend, causing alternating chills and fever, resembling Warm Malaria (Wen Nue), which over time becomes Consumption (Lao). I once read in the Records of the Grand Historian, Biography of Cang Gong, about Han Nu, attendant to King of Jibei, suffering from lower back and shoulder pain, chills, and fever. All physicians thought it was chills and fever. Cang Gong said, "The illness arose from desiring a man but being unable to obtain one." How did he know she desired a man but could not get one? He diagnosed her pulse as string-like emerging from the Cun position. Thus he knew it. Men focus on Essence (Jing), women focus on Blood (Xue). When men's Essence is abundant, they desire sexual intercourse; when women's Blood is abundant, they conceive pregnancy. This is because the Liver stores Blood. The Jueyin Liver Meridian pulse is string-like emerging from the Cun position extending to the Yuji area, indicating excess Yin. Thus, Chu Cheng's words are indeed meaningful.
