After taking lithic stones (Rushi, 乳石), there are certain medicines and foods that should not be consumed, those that can generally be eaten but offer no benefit, those that are beneficial to the person and facilitate the metabolism of the stone, and those that should be kept on hand for emergencies.
Regarding the management of Stone Qi activation (Shi Fa Dong,
Foods that cannot be eaten and those that can generally be eaten. (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
[Foods to Avoid]
Animal fat/oil (Its nature is slippery to the intestines and causes loss of appetite; even if eaten, do not consume in large quantities).
Xiangyuan (*Piper kadsura* / Chinese Long Pepper) (Can induce sores and simultaneously activate Stone Qi).
Shepherd's purse (*Capsella bursa-pastoris* / Jicai, 荠) (Activates Stone Qi; some say it damages the efficacy of the stone medicine).
It is best not to eat foods that are contraindicated.
If one wishes to eat them, they must be processed and refined, mixed with green onion and Sichuan pepper, before they can be generally consumed.
Butter/Ghee (Moistens the abdomen but promotes the circulation of Stone Qi).
Winter melon and Nightshade (*Solanum nigrum* / Donggua, 冬瓜; Longkui, 龙葵) (These two substances effectively suppress Stone Qi; people taking stones often consume them, preferably taken hot).
Turnip (*Brassica rapa* / Manjing, 蔓菁) (Prepared as yellow pickled mustard greens and eaten with meat).
When Stone Qi activates, bathing is appropriate and will provide relief. If symptoms persist after bathing, other treatments may be employed. If bathing does not resolve the issue, one may proceed to take decoctions such as those containing Scallion White (Congbai, 葱白) and Ephedra (Mahuang, 麻黄), as detailed later.
The following is a list of emergency medicines to keep on hand:
Zixue Powder (Purple Snow), Jinshiling, Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草), Ophiopogon Rhizome (Weirui, 葳蕤), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 黄芩), Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄), White Dog Feces, Mirabilite (Puxiao, 朴硝), Gypsum (Shigao, 石膏), Reed Rhizome (Lugen, 芦根), Fermented Soybean (Xiangchi, 香豉), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong, 麦门冬).
Specifically, those taking lithic stones should always keep the following medicines on hand:
Ginseng (Renshen, 人参), Mirabilite (Puxiao, 朴硝), Bamboo Sap (Kuzhuli, 苦竹沥), Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄), Gardenia (Zhizi, 栀子), Good Fermented Soybean (Haoshi, 好豉), Barley Flour, Shepherd's Purse (Jicai, 荠), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 黄连), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma, 升麻), Gypsum (Shigao, 石膏), Bamboo Leaf Juice (Jingli, 荆沥), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 黄芩), Winter Melon Root (Dongguagen, 冬瓜根).
Five Deviations (Wu Guai, 五乖) (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
1. Wearing heavy clothes leads to feeling cold. (Ordinary people feel warm in cold weather attire, but those taking stones should wear light clothes; wearing heavy clothes causes chills. The classics state "extreme heat generates cold," hence this is the first deviation.)
2. Hunger produces foul odors. (Ordinary people who fail to digest food produce "raw food qi"; those taking stones who endure hunger or miss meals also generate this raw food qi, differing from ordinary people, hence this is the second deviation.)
3. Extreme fatigue requires self-exertion. (Ordinary people need rest when extremely tired, but those taking stones, especially after prolonged sitting or extreme fatigue, should engage in moderate activity to dissipate Stone Qi and ensure smooth flow, hence this is the third deviation.)
4. Warmth causes diarrhea. (Ordinary people suffer diarrhea from cold and recover with warmth; those taking stones experience diarrhea when warm and improve when cold, hence this is the fourth deviation.)
5. Dietary preference for cold. (Ordinary people harmonize their internal organs with warm food, but those taking stones require cold food and drink to feel stable, hence this is the fifth deviation. From *Qianjin Yifang*.)
Seven Urgencies (Qi Ji, 七急) (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
1. Bathing without delay. (If one feels body warmth/pain, joint stiffness, slight fever, or mental restlessness, bathing is required immediately. If initial chills occur, use cold water first...)
2. Eating without starvation. (Eat when needed; do not endure hunger, hence this is the second urgency.)
3. Wine must be pure, clear, and warm. (Drink regularly regardless of season, amount according to desire; hot wine is particularly good, hence this is the third urgency.)
4. Remove clothing once warm.
5. Food must be extremely cold.
6. Bedding must be thin.
7. Food intake must be sufficient to suppress (Stone Qi).
Eight Don'ts (Ba Bu Ke, 八不可) (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
1. Seeking fire/heating in winter cold.
2. Preferring hot food and drinks.
3. Self-doubt during diagnosis. (One must carefully monitor dosage and condition; if uneasy, follow prescribed methods strictly and avoid self-generated doubt.)
4. Fear and avoidance of wind and dampness. (If sudden head wind-heat, mental restlessness, or irritability occurs, one should comb hair facing the wind and wash face/hands with water; this differs from ordinary wind-damp conditions.)
5. Reluctance to walk at extremes. (If prolonged sitting/lying leads to extreme fatigue, one must walk and exert oneself.)
6. Fear of excessive food intake.
7. Preference for thick, soft mats/seats.
8. Following desires blindly. (Not following desires allows for better regulation of Stone Qi conditioning, which is superior.)
Three Certainties (San Wu Yi, 三无疑) (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
1. Deliberately departing from common sense/norms.
2. Surrendering the mind and abandoning the root.
3. Sleeping and dwelling in cold environments.
