The regions of Jiangdong and Lingnan are low-lying and damp. During spring and summer, toxic vapors are abundant. Combined with the steaming moisture from mountains and rivers, miasma toxins easily arise. Wind-dampness diseases rise from the ground and easily afflict humans. Therefore, this disease often develops from the lower body upwards; the feet first become weak and stiff, followed by numbness and weakness, accompanied by headache, irritability, phlegm stagnation, vomiting, slight swelling of the shins, insensitivity of the lower abdomen, high fever with aversion to cold, flaccidity of the four limbs, mental confusion, and obstruction of urination and defecation. When the toxin attacks the heart, death occurs rapidly. These are all types of Miasma Hong Kong Foot (Zhang Du Xiang Gang Jiao).
Formulas:
Jinya Jiu (Golden Tooth Wine) (also known as Da Jin Ya Jiu, from *Shengji Zonglu*): Treats invasion of the human body by miasma toxins. Manifestations include deviation of the mouth and eyes, hemiplegia, contracture of hands and feet, and painful swelling of the joints. Severe cases present with insensitivity of the lower abdomen, termed Hong Kong Foot. It also treats wind-cold-damp bi-syndrome.
Ingredients: Jinya (1 jin), Cizǐ (processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed), Fuzi (processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed), Tianxiong (processed until cracked, skin and umbilicus removed, each 2 liang), Renshen (2.5 liang), Roucongrong (sliced and baked, 2 liang), Duhuo (radicle removed, 8 liang), Baifuling (skin removed, 2 liang), Danggui (sliced and baked), Baizhu, Fangfeng (forked parts removed), Huangqi, Shanyu, Xixin (seedlings and leaves removed), Gui (bark removed), Yinyu (roasted), Shinan (lightly roasted), Xiongqiong, Digupi, Wujia Pi [soaked in decoction and roasted, each 2 or 3 liang], Danshen (5.5 liang), Duzhong (bark removed and roasted, 7 liang), Bibo (3 liang), Cishi (washed in vinegar seven times, separately ground, 10 liang), Houpo (bark removed, roasted with ginger juice), Yiyiren (1 jin), Baizhi [2 or 3 liang], Maidong (heart removed and baked, 5 liang), Shihu (roots removed, 8 liang), Weirui (2 liang), Zhike (pulp removed, stir-fried with bran, alternatively Zhishi), Jiegeng (each 3 liang), Niuxi (seedlings removed, sliced, 5.5 liang), Gouji (hair removed, 3 liang), Shengdihuang (2 sheng), Shuolie (4 liang), Huangqin (black heart removed), Yuanzhi (heart removed), Manjingzi (each 3 liang, alternatively Mujingzi). Gradually increase to two ge or three ge. Maintain a continuous sensation of alcohol in the body until efficacy is achieved. The medicinal power is mild and it treats many conditions. For any deficiency-wind syndrome where the four limbs feel slight wind invasion, it must be taken. Preparers must follow the formula strictly without arbitrary modifications.
