Zhang Zhongjing stated: In cases of hanging death, if the epigastrium (heart area) remains slightly warm, revival is possible within one day. Ge Hong stated: If the epigastrium is still slightly warm, revival is possible even after a long time. The key point in both theories lies in whether there is residual warmth in the heart region.
In cases of hanging, if death has just occurred, the body should be gently supported and lowered. Although the Yin and Yang meridians may be suddenly obstructed, the true Qi of the Zang-Fu organs may not have completely exhausted; therefore, it can still circulate.
For those who have just died and whose hair is gradually becoming stiff, a small amount of Guixin Tang (Cinnamon Heart Decoction) or clear rice gruel should be held in the rescuer's mouth and slowly administered to the patient, merely moistening the throat. Once swallowing becomes possible, administration can be paused. Additionally, two rescuers should use tubes to blow air into both ears, which is beneficial.
Treatment for Hanging Death (from *Qianjin Fang*)
When rescuing someone who has been hanged, it is crucial to firmly press the chest, not to cut the rope immediately, but to hold the person and slowly untie the knot. If the epigastrium is still warm, cover the nose and mouth with a woolen blanket.
Another Prescription (from *Qianjin Fang*) for treating hanging death and cases where Qi is about to cease due to Evil Qi invasion.
Grind Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) into powder, form pills the size of a broad bean, and insufflate them into both nostrils. Alternatively, insufflate Zaojiao powder through a scallion leaf into the nostrils.
Another Prescription (from *Shibian Liangfang*)
Puncture the rooster comb to obtain blood, and drip it into the mouth; life will return. For males, use hen blood; for females, use rooster blood. Applying it to the throat is also effective. Another method states: for males, use rooster blood; for females, use hen blood.
Another Prescription (from *Zhouhou Fang*)
Use Baiji (the white part of chicken feces), sized like a date, mixed with half a cup of wine, and instill into the mouth and nose. This is effective.
Another Prescription (from *Qianjin Fang*)
Collect dust from the roof beams, measure out amounts the size of soybeans, and place each into a small bamboo tube. Four people should each hold one tube and simultaneously blow air into both ears and nostrils; life will return.
Another Prescription (from *Qianjin Fang*)
Instill urine into the nose, mouth, eyes, and ears. Grasp a tuft of hair, thick as a brush handle, and pull vigorously; life will return immediately.
Emergency Treatment for Hanging (from *Zhouhou Fang*)
Immediately cover the mouth and nose with hands to prevent any internal Qi from escaping. After approximately two hours (si), when Qi returns, the patient will revive.
Emergency Treatment for Hanging (from *Shibian Liangfang*)
Pull the hair, plug both ears with an object, needle the nostrils with a scallion leaf, and have two people blow forcefully. Bite the heels; life will return. One may also plug the nose.
Treatment for Hanging Death (from *Qianjin Fang*)
Instill Lanqing juice (Indigofera tinctoria juice).
Treatment for Hanging Death (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
Place Songzi You (Pine Seed Oil) in the mouth and allow it to be swallowed; life will return. This is also used for drowning.
For hanging death where initial rescue fails, use the cart-dragging method (from *Shengji Zonglu*).
Wrap the body tightly with silk, load it onto an ox cart, and drag it for about thirty li. Have a person stand on the cart, tread on the shoulders to stimulate respiration, and blow into the ears.
Treatment for Evil Miasma, Hanging, Drowning, Nightmare Death, Heatstroke, Freezing Death, and other sudden deaths. Or those who die suddenly during sleep due to prior illness, all belong to "Zhong E" (Evil Qi Invasion).
Insert Huangxin Cong (the yellow heart of scallion) or Jiu Huang (yellow part of leek) deeply (4-5 cun) into the left nostril for males and the right nostril for females, until bleeding occurs from the eyes; life will return.
Another Prescription (from *Shenghui Fang*)
Soak cotton in good wine (half a cup). Hold the patient's limbs firmly to prevent惊 (fright/movement), and drip the wine into the nostrils.
Another Prescription (from *Shenghui Fang*)
Inspect the inner surface of the upper lip for a green polypus, sized like a millet grain. Puncture and remove it with a needle; the condition will resolve.
Another Prescription (from *Jingyan Liangfang*)
Burn Yangshi (Ovis/Caprae Faeces) and smoke the nostrils with the fumes.
Another Prescription (from *Zhouhou Fang*) for treating cases where the epigastrium is still slightly warm, allowing revival even after a long time.
Slowly support and untie the rope. Suspend the hair so the head is about five cun off the ground. Plug both nostrils. Insert a reed tube into the mouth down to the pharynx. Have a person exhale ("xu") into the tube. After a while... [text missing] ...make the hair... [text missing].
Another Prescription for treating Hanging Death.
Burn three finger-cups' worth of rope into ash, and ingest it.
Treatment for the Five Extinctions (Wu Jue). One is Hanging, Two is Crushing by Walls, Three is Drowning, Four is Nightmare/Charm, Five is Childbirth. For all Five Extinctions, use Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) one liang.
