The disease known as "Yin-Yang Yi" (Exchange of Yin and Yang) following Shaoyang syndrome. The patient experiences heavy body sensation, shortness of breath (Shaoqi), urgency and tension in the lower abdomen, sometimes with spasms drawing into the genital region, heat rushing up to the chest, heaviness of the head making it difficult to lift. (After a major illness has just healed, blood and Qi have not yet recovered, and residual heat remains. If one engages in sexual intercourse forcibly and contracts this disease, it is called "Yi". When a man's illness has newly healed but he is not fully restored, and he interacts sexually with a woman causing her to fall ill, or vice versa, it falls under this category.)
Formula for Burned Underwear Powder (Shao Kun San):
Take the inner garment (Zhongkun) of a woman, cut off the part near the genital area, burn it to ash, mix with water, and administer one cubic-inch spoonful (Fangcunbi). Take three times a day. Once urination becomes smooth and the glans penis swells slightly, the patient will be cured.
For "Lao Fu" (Relapse due to Overexertion) after a major illness has healed, Zhi Shi Zhi Zi Tang (Bitter Orange and Gardenia Decoction) is the primary treatment. If there is retained food stagnation, add Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), five or six pieces the size of a Go stone.
(There are two types of relapse: Lao Fu and Shi Fu. After Shaoyang syndrome has newly healed, blood and Qi are not yet balanced, and residual heat remains. Falling ill due to early physical labor is called "Lao Fu".)
Formula for Zhi Shi Zhi Zi Chi Tang (Bitter Orange, Gardenia, and Fermented Soybean Decoction):
Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange, three pieces, roasted, bitter, cold) Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit, fourteen pieces, broken open, bitter, cold) Chi (Prepared Soybean, one sheng, wrapped in silk, bitter, cold)
(Zhi Shi Zhi Zi Chi Tang should theoretically be an emetic agent. Here, covering the patient to induce slight sweating is because the heat is gathered above; bitter substances induce vomiting. If heat is gathered at the exterior, sweating resolves it.)
Boil Zhi Zi and Zhi Zi separately first, then add other herbs.
After Shaoyang syndrome has resolved, if fever recurs, Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is the primary treatment. If the pulse is floating, resolve it by inducing sweating. If the pulse is deep and solid, resolve it by purging.
(After healing, if residual heat remains and fever recurs, give Xiao Chai Hu Tang to harmonize. A floating pulse indicates heat at the exterior, hence use sweating. A deep-solid pulse indicates heat at the interior, hence use purging.)
After a major illness has healed, if there is water qi accumulation (edema) from the waist down, Mu Li Ze Xie San (Oyster Shell and Alisma Powder) is the primary treatment.
(After a major illness heals, Spleen and Stomach Qi is deficient, unable to control Kidney water. Water overflows into the Lower Jiao, causing swelling below the waist. The Jingui Yaolue states: Swelling below the waist...)
Formula for Mu Li Ze Xie San (Oyster Shell and Alisma Powder):
Mu Li (Oyster Shell, salty, neutral, roasted) Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome, salty, cold) Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root, bitter, cold) Shu Qi (Periploca Root Bark, acrid, neutral, washed to remove fishy smell) Ting Li (Descurainia Seed, bitter, cold, roasted) Shang Lu Gen (Phytolacca Root, salty, promoting upward movement and draining)
(Salty flavors promote upward movement and drainage. The salty nature of Mu Li, Ze Xie, and Hai Zao drains water qi. The Neijing states: When dampness abounds internally, treat it with bitter flavors, assisted by sour and acrid flavors.)
Grind the above seven ingredients into powder. Administer one Fangcunbi with rice soup, three times a day.
After a major illness has healed, if the patient frequently drools and cannot stop for a long time, it is due to Cold in the Stomach. One should use pill medicine to warm it; Li Zhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) is suitable.
(After sweating, Yang Qi is insufficient, leading to deficiency-cold in the Stomach, which fails to receive fluids, hence frequent drooling that persists. Give Li Zhong Wan to warm the Stomach.)
After Shaoyang syndrome has resolved, if the patient is weak and emaciated, has shortness of breath, and feels nausea with rebellious Qi, Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) is the primary treatment.
(After Shaoyang syndrome resolves, fluid deficiency leads to weakness and emaciation, and residual heat remains. Heat injures Qi, causing shortness of breath. Rebellious Qi causes nausea. Give Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang.)
Formula for Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction):
Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaves, two handfuls, acrid, neutral) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, one jin, sweet, cold) Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, half sheng, washed, acrid, warm) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, one sheng, sweet, neutral, heart removed) Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, three liang, sweet, slightly warm) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, two liang, roasted, sweet, neutral) Jing Mi (Rice Grain, half sheng, sweet, neutral)
(Acrid and sweet disperse and eliminate heat. The sweet and acrid nature of Zhu Ye, Shi Gao, and Gan Cao disperses residual heat. Sweet flavors soothe the Spleen and tonify Qi. Mai Men Dong nourishes Yin. Boil the above seven ingredients in ten dou of water, reduce to six sheng, remove dregs, add Jing Mi, cook until rice is done, remove rice, take one sheng warm, three times a day.)
If the patient's pulse has normalized but they experience slight irritability towards dusk, it is because the illness has newly healed, and people force them to eat too much. The Spleen and Stomach Qi is still weak and cannot digest the food, thus causing slight irritability. Reducing food intake will lead to recovery.
(The Yangming channel is prosperous during Shen, You, and Xu hours. Retained food in the Stomach causes slight irritability at dusk. It should be purged by reducing grain intake.)
