In previous years, a patient suffered from hematochezia filling nearly a basin, suddenly becoming extremely fatigued. Various medicines were ineffective. I said, "This is precisely Intestinal Wind." I instructed him to take Yuxie Wan (Jade Dust Pill). The bleeding stopped after three doses. I have suffered from this disease for thirty years and have collected nearly fifty prescriptions for treating lower body bleeding. Some were effective, some were not; some worked initially but failed later; some were discarded because they didn't work initially, but proved effective upon re-administration. It is not easy to summarize briefly. Generally, the types of this disease vary, and it is easy to cure if matched correctly. For example, bright red blood indicates Intestinal Wind; turbid, dark blood indicates Visceral Toxin (Zangdu, 脏毒); blood shooting like a thread from the anus indicates Worm Hemorrhoids (Chongzhi, 虫痔). There is also a type of lower body deficiency where Yang Qi fails to ascend, causing blood to descend with Qi. Zhang Zhongjing stated: "A pulse that is wiry and large; wiry indicates reduction, large indicates hollow (Kou). Reduction implies cold, hollow implies deficiency. Cold and deficiency clashing is named Ge (Leather) pulse. In women, it causes miscarriage and dripping blood; in men, it causes loss of blood and essence. This is lower body deficiency causing bleeding." If a Ge pulse is obtained, warming and tonifying medicines are appropriate. Worm hemorrhoids are suitable for fumigation; Qianjin Fang recommends using Mugwort Leaf (Ai Ye, 艾叶) skin, which is best. I once prepared this remedy and found it quite effective.
