Treatment for headache. (Formula from Shen Kuo)
Shihuang (Sulfur, 2 liang, ground into fine powder) Xiaoshi (Niter, 1 liang)
Make water pills the size of a finger. Chew with Lachay (waxed tea) on an empty stomach.
My cousin suffered from head wind disease for over twenty years. Every time it attacked, his headache was severe as if his head were breaking, and he could not eat for several days. Various methods failed to cure him. The physician Tian Zi saw this and said, "My mother suffered from this disease for decades and was cured by one medicine." I sought it from him and received ten pills, taking one per day. After more than ten days, Zi came again and asked, "What do you usually eat when your headache occurs?" I answered, "I suffer most from drinking alcohol and eating fish." Zi allowed me to eat fish and drink alcohol freely. He said, "After taking ten of these pills, will you still have headaches?" Following his advice, I ate them, and indeed, the headaches did not recur, and I recovered completely. I had known Zi for several years, and upon parting, he left this formula to me. Physician Huai in Chenzhou also has this pill, sized like a wutong seed. Take fifteen pills each time, swallowing with waxed tea or cold water that is smoking/steaming; upon swallowing, one feels suddenly refreshed. If caused by cold, take with boiling mugwort decoction. *Suwen* states: Headache and disorders of the vertex are due to deficiency below and excess above, affecting the Foot Shaoyin and Foot Taiyang meridians; severely, it enters the Kidney, causing dizziness, unsteadiness, blurred vision, and deafness. Excess below and deficiency above affect the Foot Shaoyang and Foot Jueyin meridians; severely, it enters the Liver. Deficiency below refers to Kidney deficiency. Thus, Kidney jue causes headache; deficiency above refers to Liver deficiency, thus Liver jue causes dizziness. Xunmeng describes a sensation as if something covers the head, with unsteadiness, blurred vision, and deafness—all symptoms of vertigo. Therefore, Liver jue vertigo and Kidney jue vertex pain are different in this manner. To treat Liver jue, Gouteng San is mentioned earlier.
Da Fuzi (Large Aconite Root, 1 piece), remove the heart; Quanxie (Whole Scorpion, 2 pieces), place inside. Use the extracted Fuzi powder, mix with Zhongru (Hematitum, 1 fen), and a little flour mixed with water to wrap and roast until cooked. Grind all into powder, aiming for a scorched yellow color. Mix with Congcha (Scallion and Tea) and take 1 qian or half a qian.
Another formula
Duanxiong (Large Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome, 2 pieces, cut into four slices) Da Fuzi (Large Aconite Root, 1 piece, raw with skin, ground into powder)
Mix the Fuzi powder with water to form a dough-like consistency, wrap around the Duanxiong in four parts. If there is insufficient Fuzi powder, add a little flour. After wrapping, pierce several small holes with a needle. Smoke with Zhenmoshe (Real Musk) at the pierced areas, allow the fragrance to penetrate, then knead the holes closed. If no fragrance is felt inside, smoke for another stick of incense. Roast in hot ashes using a yanzi (small pot) until cooked, then grind into powder. Take half a qian each time, mixed with Congcha, at any time. The two formulas from Yang Jier, a physician from Sishui, are miraculous and effective.
Yet another formula
Good Duanxiong (Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome, half liang) ground into powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with Lachay clear liquid. It is very rapid. Once, a woman suffered from postpartum headache; one dose cured her.
