[Shennong Bencao Jing, Middle Category]
[Flavor and Nature] Salty, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats internal injury (damage to the zang-fu organs caused by excessive sexual activity or other factors), impotence (failure of erection), induces strong heat and rigidity in the penis, aids in conception, and treats leukorrhea and twelve types of gynecological disorders in women.
[Examination] It is said: There are three types of dogs: guard dogs, hunting dogs, and domesticated dogs. In the avian constellations, it corresponds to Lou; in the Eight Trigrams, it corresponds to Gen (Mountain); in the Five Elements, it belongs to Wood; in the Twelve Earthly Branches, it corresponds to Xu (Dog); it is born from the essence of the Big Dipper stars. Seven times nine equals sixty-three, representing the generation of Yang Qi, hence dogs gestate for three months. Among the puppies, one type is called (pronounced Zong), two types are called Shi, one type is called (pronounced Qi), and immature ones are called Hao. The Erya states: (pronounced Zhao) refers to a dog with abundant hair; Pang denotes a dog with many hairs. KT (pronounced Xian) describes continuous barking. indicates a dog that understands human intent and obeys. (pronounced Xing) refers to a vigorous dog. Di refers to a red dog. Hao refers to a white dog. Jiao refers to a small dog. , black in color, is a fine dog from Han. (pronounced Que), black and white, is a fine dog from Song. (pronounced Bian) refers to a tiger-chasing dog. Qiongqi refers to a divine dog that drives away evil spirits. A long snout is called Xian (pronounced Lian), a short snout is called (pronounced Xie). Castration is called Yi. A dog standing four chi high is called . A rabid dog is called (pronounced Zhe). Dogs good at guarding have long snouts, those good at hunting have short snouts, those for food are fat-bodied, and those for medicine are guard dogs. Hunting dogs seize prey, guard dogs eat sparingly, their nature is treacherous yet they bark to warn and defend, thus the Gen trigram symbolizes the dog because Yang Qi is above. Jackals kneel when seeing them, tigers become drunk after eating them, and they die if they consume the fruit of Momordica cochinchinensis (Mu Bie Zi). In Liaodong, there are Eagle-backed dogs that lay three eggs per clutch: one eagle, one hawk, and one dog, nourishing beasts with avian milk, exemplifying transformational generation. Also, the spirit of old wood resembles a dog, black and tailless, which can be cooked and eaten; this is the transformation of the lifeless into the living, a change of spiritual essence. The Jingchu Ji states: Chickens fear cold, dogs fear heat. Dogs fear Almond (Xing Ren) and react inversely to Phytolacca acinoides (Shang Lu). Eating garlic damages the body; eating water chestnut causes madness. Unroasted dog meat causes Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting syndrome); pregnant women eating it bear silent children. Consuming it after a febrile disease can cause sudden death. Sick dogs, rabid dogs, and dead dogs possess severe toxicity. Dogs with suspended hooves biting people; dogs with red thighs and agitation have a musky odor; dogs with red eyes carry corpse poison, otherwise they go mad and droop their tails.
[Elucidation] It is said: The character 'Quan' (Dog) is pictographic. Confucius said: Looking at the character 'Dog' is like looking at a drawing of a dog. Han Fei said: "Fly-like maneuvering and dog-like skulking." Because of being "dog-like" (skulking/compromising), it takes the radical 'Gou'. The Piya states: Dogs hunt; 'Shou' implies guarding, 'Lie' implies chasing. Confucius said: 'Gou' means 'Kou' (to knock/strike). Striking the air with barks to guard; they gather in groups according to time, demonstrating the ability to hold fast. If one does not know how to maintain fullness, exhausting essence through desire, leading to internal injury and impotence, this herb functions to alert, defend, and strictly guard, making the essence strong and full; if released at the right time, conception occurs. The mechanism for treating leukorrhea and twelve disorders in women can be silently comprehended from this.
