[Song Kai Bao Ben Cao]
[Taste and Nature] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Stimulates appetite, directs Qi downward, eliminates dampness-water qi, making the body robust and healthy.
[Verification] It is said: Baiyu (White Fish), also known as [missing character], also known as [missing character]. "Bai" means white, pure white color. It lives in rivers and lakes. The large ones are six or seven chi long, white in color, narrow in shape, flat-bellied, with fine scales, containing fine spines inside, and both head and tail point upwards. For moxibustion sores that do not heal (fail to erupt/pus out), it can be made into food/soup and eaten.
[Elucidation] It is said: Fishes, hiding in deep abysses in winter and wading in spring, undergo changes without ceasing, floating and sinking together in the gate of growth. White corresponds to Metal/Gold; Metal/Gold is the mother of Water, the source of endless generation. Master Zhang Zhongjing uses it to treat Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) caused by the loss of fluids leading to upper Jiao dryness, and difficulty in urination caused by the loss of fluids leading to impaired downward moistening. Kai Bao Ben Cao advocates its ability to open the stomach; opening the stomach means developing the Upper Jiao, steaming the skin, filling the body, and moistening the hair like mist and dew irrigation. It makes the body moist, robust, and healthy, ensuring Qi descends without obstruction and water is expelled without retention. Generally, when function acts, the form diminishes; when form rests, function ceases; function does not forget form, and form does not lose function. If lost, there is no greater misfortune than this. Just as water follows fish, clouds follow dragons, and wind follows tigers, the high and low are close, and all things follow their own kind.
[Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao]
[Taste and Nature] Salty, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Boiled juice is drunk to stop thirst, treat Lin syndrome (dysuria), and detoxify wild beast meat.
[Verification] It is said: Produced in sunny areas of Nanhai and Jiaozhou. Formed by water foam gathering dust and agitating on the water surface for a long time until solidified. Yellowish-white in color, void and light in texture, still retaining the original appearance of dust and foam. Ancestors said: Mountains melt into water, returning to the source to flow into the sea; bubbles, though illusory and instantly hardening, still show their original form, moving up and down with waves, stopping and going, going and stopping. Those who understand the mind grasp its essence.
[Elucidation] Baopuzi says: Firing clay into tiles, burning wood into charcoal, and turning water foam into Pumice (Fushishi), all involve removing softness and brittleness, transforming them into hardness and rigidity. Buddhist scriptures say: When fire is weak and water is strong, moisture becomes the great sea; when dry, it becomes continents and pools. Therefore, in that great sea, firelight often rises; in those continents and pools, rivers and streams constantly flow. Although they transform into different shapes, the nature of fire and water never perishes. The fact that Pumice floats on water indicates that the nature of fire floats and flares upward like on a kang. The Book of Songs, Daya, says: "Floating upon it," which is exactly this meaning. If used to stop thirst and treat Lin syndrome, it dries what is wet and moistens what is dry. If used for accumulations, old phlegm, goiters, hernias, masses, and sandy dysuria, it removes hardness and transforms it into softness. Following the defects of the root body (human body), it manifests the universality of the Four Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind). Using accumulation to treat accumulation is like illusion returning to illusion.
