[Hulu Ba]
[Flavor and Properties] Bitter, greatly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats deficiency-cold qi of the Yuan Zang (Yuan Zang refers to the Kidney, the root of congenital constitution). When combined with Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) and Shiliuhuang (Stalagmite/Sulfur), it treats Kidney deficiency-cold, abdominal and hypochondriac distension/fullness, and a bluish-black complexion. When combined with Xiangzi (Fennel Fruit) and Taoheren (Peach Kernel), it is highly effective for treating Qi stagnation in the Bladder.
[Verification] It is said: Hulu Ba, also known as "Shen Cao Du Hu" (Governor of the Kidney Department). It grows in Hainan and various foreign lands; currently, it is also produced in Guangzhou and Qianzhou, but those imported by sea are superior. Sprouts emerge in spring, fruits set in summer, and pods are harvested in autumn. After thorough washing, soak in wine, sun-dry, steam until cooked, stir-fry, and then use.
[Elucidation] It is said: "Hu" means to converge and interact; "Lu" means fire vessel; "Ba" means twisting and turning back, like water flowing in an open space. This implies its ability to converge and interact with the Yuan Yang (Primordial Yang) in both kidneys, likely named after its efficacy. Therefore, it treats deficiency-cold of the Yuan Zang, decline of Mingmen Fire (Fire of the Gate of Life), and the inability to converge and return to the origin, serving as a counter-treatment. Tonifying the right kidney is essentially warming the Dantian (Elixir Field). In cases of Kidney deficiency-cold with a dark, sallow, or blackish complexion, this indicates not only fire decline but also sudden extinguishment of Yang. It is necessary to combine with Fuzi and Shiliuhuang, allowing the Yang-toxic heat to act in concert, to achieve cure. (Referencing *Jin Gui Yao Lue* and *Ji Sheng Fang*, using them as the foundation, one must rely on ministerial and envoy herbs to facilitate function; they can be used together or alone.)
[Ha Jin Sha]
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily promotes free flow and unblocking of the Small Intestine. When combined with Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Mayaxiao (Sodium Nitrate), and Pengsha (Borax), it treats mania caused by heat in Shanghan (Cold Damage) syndrome. It can be prepared as pills or powders.
[Verification] It is said: It is found in Qianzhong, Jiangzhe, Huxiang, Sichuan, and Shaanxi, growing beneath forests. The stem is thin as a thread, climbing bamboo, reaching about one chi in height. Leaves resemble coriander; flowers are fine and thin, green on both sides, with tight wrinkles containing sand within the veins, resembling Puhuang (Typha Pollen). It does not produce flowers or seeds; roots are slender and tough. Both the sand and stems/leaves are used medicinally. Harvest the whole plant in July, dry partially in the sun, place on paper, and beat with a stick so that sand falls onto the paper. Continue drying and beating until all sand is extracted. Crush leaves to extract juice, used to boil sand and condense mercury (metaphorically describing its precipitating nature).
My predecessor said: It resembles gold but is light in texture; it resembles sand but is smooth in quality. The generation of sand from grassy qi is like water forming ice. It enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, effectively treating symptoms of sand and stones in urine.
[Elucidation] It is said: The Tianchi (Heavenly Pool) accepts hundreds of rivers to form the sea, stopping without overflowing, while the Weilu (Tail Gate) drains it; this describes capacity. "Jin" (Gold) refers to color; "Sha" (Sand) refers to shape, resembling Puhuang. Puhuang spreads over flowers; gold remains unchanged over time; Ha Jin Sha spreads under leaves. Drooping branches and spreading leaves curve downward like hooks, resembling the peak prosperity when summer fire spits out blossoms. However, while most plants spread yellow at the flower center, Puhuang spreads on flowers, and Ha Jin Sha spreads under leaves; this precisely demonstrates that essence concentrates in yellow, distinguishing it from the transient appearance and disappearance of other flowers. It is suitable for entering the Fu organ of the Heart, specifically the Small Intestine Meridian. The Small Intestine separates pure from turbid, transmitting dregs to the Large Intestine, and channels water pathways to the Bladder, stopping without overflowing, regulating drainage as its capacity.
(Zhizi blooms like six-petaled ice flowers, providing cooling relief against heat-induced agitation. Pengsha rotates like a wheel, with rapid pivot movement. Yaxiao derives its nature from water and fire; it can follow water to counteract fire, or reverse water to counteract fire, following the principle: if the singular formula fails, use the paired formula; if the paired formula fails, use counter-assistance to obtain the effect.)
