[Textual Research] It is stated: Xuncao is a fragrant herb, also known as Hui, which is opposite to You. People in Nan Yue call it Yanc grass. In the Kaibao era of Song Dynasty, it was called Linglingxiang. It grows in the valleys of Lingling, and is found in various prefectures of Hunan and Hubei, mostly in low-lying wetlands. After entering spring, the perennial roots sprout again; the leaves resemble Ocimum basilicum (Basil) or Cannabis sativa (Hemp leaf), growing pairwise. It flowers in July and is harvested in August; it can be worn as an ornament, used for bedding, or burned for fumigation. Even when dried and withered, its fragrance remains rich and lingering. *Classic of Mountains and Seas* states: On Fu Mountain, there is a herb with hemp-like leaves and square stems, bearing red flowers and black fruits; its scent resembles Miju, and it can cure leprosy (*Li*). *Erya Yi* states: This herb can remove foul odors and make the body fragrant; therefore, in ancient purification rituals, this herb was used for fumigation to invoke deities. *Pi Ya* states: When scented by smoke, the aura becomes gentle and benevolent; when exposed to sun, it becomes harsh and fierce. Thus, in character etymology, "Hui" (orchid/fragrant herb) shares the meaning with "Hui" (benevolence). In recent times, people generally refer to plants with multiple flowers on one stem as Hui, and those with a single flower per stem as Lan (Orchid). Even scholars of *Shijing* and *Shujing* often cite these names without knowing what specific herb they refer to, merely valuing the name while losing track of the reality, which is typical of such cases. *Lisao Bianzheng* states: In ancient times, Lan and Hui were fragrant in both flowers and leaves, unchanged by dryness or humidity; in modern times, although their calyces are fragrant, they become putrid when dried. Lan has been slandered since Tang Dynasty, and Hui in gardens has long been wronged.
My late father said: Red flowers possess the virtue of connecting with spirits. Black fruits embody the sentiment of hidden depths. This is a kidney herb that utilizes heart function, capable of harmonizing spirit and mind, dispersing cold wind, and achieving...
[Commentary] It is said: The Son of Heaven drinks Chang wine, while feudal lords use Xuncao. Chang wine is poured, whereas Xuncao is burned to emit fragrance. Therefore, "Xun" corresponds to "Xun" (fumigate/smoke), where Xun refers to fire smoke rising upward. Gu Zhenzhen considered that rising from below to above is the Qi of Liver Wood generating in Spring. Since diseases governed by Spring Qi manifest in the head, if the Qi cannot accumulate and ascend continuously, causing a lack of correspondence between upper and lower parts, this method is appropriate. Observing fish swimming through water carrying water helps understand the principle of upper and lower interactions.
(Mr. Wang Shaolong once said that the initial generation of Shaoyang Qi is like the initial emergence of incense smoke: light, void, floating, upright, and long. Therefore, in the first pentad of Start of Spring, it is named Fish...)
