(Ben Jing Shang Pin) [Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, Upper Grade]
[Flavor and Properties] Bitter, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats impotence in men and damp sores of the genitals, swelling and pain in the vagina of women, expels Bi Qi (obstructive pathogenic factors causing joint/muscle pain), benefits the joints, epilepsy, and malignant sores. Long-term use lightens the body and improves complexion.
[Verification] It is stated: Grows in valleys of Linzi Chuan, as well as in fields and village ruins. Seedlings emerge in the third lunar month, two to three chi high. Leaves resemble Miwu (Angelica dahurica var. formosana). There are over a hundred flower heads on the branches, forming a single cluster. In the fourth lunar month, white flowers bloom; fruits gather in clusters, composed of two halves, extremely light and hollow, resembling Anethum graveolens seeds (Shiluo zi), with fine ridges. For processing, soak in concentrated Indigofera tinctoria juice and Paederia scandens root juice for one "Fu" period (approx. 12 hours or overnight), drain and sun-dry. Then mix with Rehmannia glutinosa juice, steam from Si hour (9-11 AM) to Hai hour (9-11 PM), and take.
[Commentary] It is said: Shehui (venomous snakes) have a preference for Chuangxinumu (Cnidium monnieri), hence its other names Shesu and Simi. "Chuang" (bed) implies it likes to lie beneath this plant; snakes move swiftly and hide in secluded places, embodying the nature of Wind-Wood, characterized by rapid movement and change. The functions of Chuangxinumu align perfectly with this. If not for similar qi and properties, why would it be favored by venomous snakes? Impotence and damp itching in men, swelling and pain in the vagina of women, occur precisely in the secluded areas of the Jueyin Liver channel, caused by obstruction of qi flow. Chuangxinumu can disperse strong wind power and inspire the generation of Yang qi, allowing the anterior orifice to vent freely and move like a snake. It can also resolve the rebellious qi of epilepsy within the Zang organs, and the blockage in the joints. When Bi is removed, the body becomes light; when Liver blood is nourished, the complexion shines. It is truly an excellent agent for grasping Yin and Yang and maintaining the luster associated with Wind.
(The nature of Wind does not separate movement and stillness; swift movement is its dynamic aspect, while seclusion is its static aspect.)
(Ben Jing Shang Pin) [Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, Upper Grade]
[Flavor and Properties] Bitter, slightly cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats evil qi in the heart and abdomen, intestinal murmurs sounding like flowing water, accumulation of cold and heat, breaks down masses (Zheng) and eliminates flaccid tumors (Jia), stops irritability and fullness, and tonifies Qi.
[Verification] It is stated: Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza), also known as Chishen, Shanshen, Zhuma, Yinchanchcao, Benmacao, and Muyangru. Produced in Shaanxi, Hedong prefectures, and Suizhou; found in mountains everywhere. Seedlings emerge in the second lunar month, about one chi high. The stem is square with ridges. One branch has five leaves, opposite each other, resembling Mentha leaves but hairy. From the third to the ninth lunar month, small flowers form spikes resembling moths, similar to Perilla flowers, containing fine seeds. One plant has multiple roots, thick as a finger, long...
My ancestors said: Danshen is red in color, entering the Heart. Its name "Ben Zhu" (running/chasing) relates to its action. "Yin Chan" (silkworm moth/cicada) changes quickly; "Su" (speed) is faster than the cicada. It is also said: The roots are numerous and long-lived. Since they are exposed too thoroughly, during the time when Qi should be stored, how could there be accumulation?
[Commentary] It is said: "Dan" indeed refers to the color red, entering the Shaoyin Heart Master channel. It treats evil qi of the Summer season stored in the Zang organs, driving it out. "Dan" can also refer to the Pivot (Shu), allowing evil qi that has gone through the Closing (He) to turn out through the Pivot, because Shaoyin serves as the Pivot. Evil qi in the heart and abdomen, intestinal murmurs sounding like flowing water, represents the accumulation of cold and heat, where Zheng and Jia take temporary form. Although...
("Dan" refers to 3x5 before and 3x5 after, also two and a half days in the thirty-day cycle. Among the 3x5, it is called the Lunar Pivot; among the thirty days, it is called the Solar Pivot.)
