(For deficient persons, it should be used with *Ren Shen* (Ginseng); Ren Shen secures the meridians, while Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) unblocks collaterals, so their sweet-cold properties complement each other.) Treats stroke with locked jaw. (*Bencao Jing Shu* states: This is a key herb for stroke. Generally, stroke is caused by yin deficiency with hyperactive fire and phlegm-heat congestion. If it were due to external wind pathogen, how could such a cold-slippery herb be used? [It is for] severe heat from phlegm confusing the mind. (Zhu Danxi said: Phlegm located in meridians, limbs, and subcutaneous tissues cannot reach these areas without this herb. Li Shizhen said: Bamboo sap is cold and slippery, suitable for those with phlegm due to wind-heat, dryness, or fire. However, if taken by those with cold-dampness, stomach deficiency, or loose bowels, it will damage the spleen and stomach. Shoots are slippery and purgative; excessive consumption causes diarrhea. Monks refer to shoots as "intestine-scraping combs," which means the same thing.) Sudden toothache. (Burn bitter bamboo to obtain sap, apply hot to the affected area.) Only these three types are used medicinally. Extract bamboo sap using the same method as extracting *Jingli* (Bamboo Sap from Jujube branches). Use *Sheng Jiang* (Fresh Ginger) juice as an adjuvant (Ginger eliminates phlegm and balances the cold nature, so they are often used together. For infant lip ulcers, mix bamboo sap with *Huang Lian* (Coptis Rhizome), *Huang Bai* (Phellodendron Bark), and *Dan Sha* (Red Lead) for topical application; effective.)
