Salty in flavor, hot in nature, and toxic. (In *Yuyi Cao*, it is mentioned that taking Hongqian damages the brain, indicating its heat and toxicity. Zhang Shicai stated: If heat symptoms occur after taking Hongqian, drinking child's urine or human milk can detoxify it.) Used to antidote arrow poison. Also treats female labor relapse (recurrence of fever due to premature sexual intercourse). Menstrual cloths are used to treat bleeding from metal wounds (apply by heating them after roasting). It also treats bites from tigers, wild wolves, and arrows embedded in the abdomen (all burned to ash, taken with wine, one cun qi per dose, three times a day). The *Suwen* calls it menstruation. It is also called Tian Gui (Heavenly Water / Pubertal Essence). Cult practitioners call it Hongqian (Red Lead). (Li Shizhen said: Women belong to Yin and are primarily governed by blood. Their blood corresponds to the Moon above and the sea tides below. Just as the moon waxes and wanes, and tides rise and fall daily, menstruation occurs once a month, aligning with this pattern; hence it is called Yue Shui (Moon Water), Yue Xin (Monthly Trust), or Jing Jing (Menstruation). "Jing" implies constancy and regular rhythm. "Tian Gui" refers to the principle of Heaven generating Water. Calling it Hongqian is an erroneous name. Regarding menstrual disorders, some may come early or late, flow freely or be obstructed; these are pathological. There are also variations from the norm not previously discussed by ancients, which must be known. Some experience epistaxis, hematemesis, or bleeding from eyes/ears during their period; this is called Ni Xing (Retrograde Flow). Some menstruate only once every three months; this is called Ju Jing (Resident Period), colloquially known as seasonal. Some menstruate only once a year; this is called Bi Nian (Avoiding Year). Some never menstruate but can conceive; this is called An Jing (Hidden Period). Some continue to menstruate monthly even after conception and give birth; this is called Sheng Tai (Abundant Fetus), colloquially Gou Tai (Dust Fetus). Some experience heavy bleeding several months into pregnancy without miscarriage; this is called Lou Tai (Leaking Fetus). Although these can be explained by excess or deficiency of Qi and Blood, they deviate from the norm. For women, Tian Gui arrives at age fourteen (2x7) and ceases at age forty-nine (7x7); this is normal. However, there are exceptions: girls giving birth at thirteen or fourteen, as recorded by Chu Jishi (e.g., Su Daqing’s daughter conceiving at twelve); or women giving birth at fifty or sixty, as recorded in the *History of Liao* (e.g., Ji Pu’s wife bearing children in her sixties). These are extreme abnormalities. Medical students should pay attention to such cases. When women menstruate, the fluids are foul and impure; thus, gentlemen avoid them, considering them unclean and capable of damaging Yang Qi and causing disease. Preparations involving decoctions, treating smallpox, and those practicing ascetic cultivation all avoid menstruation for this reason. Currently, some charlatans deceive fools by collecting the first menses of virgin girls for consumption, calling it Xiantian Hongqian (Prenatal Red Lead). They invent names and complex formulations, claiming it is the "Jinhua" (Golden Flower) from *Can Tong Qi* or the "Shou Jing" (First Menses) from *Wu Zhen Pian*. Fools believe this and take it as a secret recipe, often developing drug eruptions (Dan Zhen), which is truly lamentable and disgusting. As Xiao Yazhen wrote in his *Jin Dan Shi*: "Those on heterodox paths love lust, forcing Yang to harvest Yin; holding Tian Gui in the mouth, they call it spiritual medicine; such muddy efforts are in vain." Alas, fools reading this poem can awaken themselves. Zhang Shicai’s exaggerated claims that Hongqian cures diseases and prolongs life are baseless. For men suffering from yin sores due to ignoring menstrual taboos, resulting in ulceration of the genitalia, use blood-stained cloth from a virgin girl, burned on tiles until the essence remains, ground into powder, and applied with sesame oil.)
