Xie (Mumiezi, *Strychnos nux-vomica*): Used externally to treat sores.
Taste: Bitter with a slight sweetness. Benefits the large intestine. Treats diarrhea, dysentery, and infantile malnutrition (Ganji). Scrofula, sores, hemorrhoids. Mastitis, orchitis. Reduces swelling and expels toxins. Promotes tissue regeneration and removes black spots (referred to as "Han", meaning dark spots). Specifically used in surgery. The seed is flat like a turtle shell and green. (De-oiled Mumiezi. Fan Mumiezi (*Strychnos ignatii*), which is smaller in shape and hairy, treats throat obstruction and dissipates mass formations.)
Fengxianzi (Jixingzi, *Impatiens balsamina* seed): Also known as Jixingzi. Has purgative and softening properties.
Taste: Slightly bitter. Nature: Warm. Treats difficult labor, accumulations and masses, dysphagia, and fish bones stuck in the throat. (In cases where a bone is stuck in the throat causing severe distress, grind white Fengxianzi into powder, mix with a large cup of water, and instill into the throat using a bamboo tube; the object will soften. Care must be taken not to let it touch the teeth, or it can be blown into the affected area as a powder.) It penetrates the bones and opens orifices. (Li Shizhen said: Fengxianzi has a rapid nature, thus it can penetrate bones and soften hardness. When cooks prepare tough meat or fish, adding a few seeds makes them easy to soften and rot, which verifies this property.) Because it penetrates the bones, it is most likely to damage teeth. Similar to Yuzhan Gen (*Disporum cantoniense* root). Those who take it must avoid contact with teeth. Excessive use also irritates the throat. (Excerpted from *Yuan Fang*: Grind Jinfenghua Zi into powder, add a small amount of arsenic, apply to the painful tooth root to extract the object.) Flower (also known as Jinfenghua). Taste: Sweet. Nature: Warm and slippery. Invigorates blood and dissipates accumulations. Treats unbearable pulling pain in the waist and hypochondrium. (Grind into a cake, dry in the sun, powder it, and take three qian on an empty stomach with wine.) Also treats snake bites. (Grind and take with wine for efficacy.) Roots and leaves: Taste bitter, sweet, and acrid. Disperse blood and unblock meridians. Soften hardness and penetrate bones. Treats swelling and pain from beating and falling injuries. (Ye Tingqi's prescription: Mash leaves into a paste, apply to swollen and broken areas; reapply when dry. Blood disperses and heals overnight. Collect dried leaves in winter, grind into powder... [Text corruption here, likely referring to another physician's method]: Use roots mashed and held in the mouth to swallow; effective especially for chicken bones. Rinse mouth with warm water immediately to prevent tooth damage, which is crucial.) Ingestion of copper or iron objects. (Same prescription as above. From Ru to Fengxian, all are substances with slight toxicity.)
Xuan (Tu Lianqiao/Cuoposhi type): Moves blood.
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Warm. Treats Bi syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness. Lijie disease (joint swelling). Traumatic injury pain. (Grind into powder, combine with Myrrh and Dragon's Blood, take with wine.) Severely damages new blood. Do not use if there is no blood stasis. (Also contraindicated for those with weak constitution and blood stasis.)
