Also known as Qilin Jie (Dragon's Blood). It harmonizes blood and astringes sores.
Sweet and salty, neutral in nature, slightly toxic. Red in color, enters the Blood aspect (referring to the level of action primarily on blood, involving the Heart and Liver organs). Scatters stasis and generates newness, specifically eliminating blood pain. Treats metal wounds and fractures/dislocations, promotes wound closure, relieves pain and generates flesh. (Ruxiang [Frankincense] and Moyao [Myrrh] both regulate Qi and Blood, whereas this herb specifically enters the Blood aspect; all are tree resins.) Excellent at closing wound edges yet capable of guiding pus out. Its nature is urgent/rapid, so it must not be used in large doses. Contraindicated for those without blood stasis accumulation. Originates from Southern Fan (Nanyang regions). When ground, it penetrates fingernails; when burned, red juice oozes out. The genuine product remains unchanged in color even after prolonged burning. Chewing does not break it down; those resembling wax are superior. (Counterfeits are sea-mother blood, tasting extremely salty with a fishy odor.) Must be separately ground into powder and sifted. (If pounded together with other herbs, it turns to dust and flies away. For ingrown toenail pain and bloody hemorrhoids, apply powder externally; for epistaxis, insufflate powder into the nose.)
This refers to Baijiaoxiang Xuan (White Resin Incense), which unblocks and regulates Qi and Blood.
Pungent, neutral in nature. Invigorates blood and resolves toxicity, relieves pain and generates flesh. Treats hematemesis, epistaxis, hemoptysis, toothache, wind-rash, carbuncles, and metal wounds; widely used in surgery. White with a slight yellow hue. Can confuse Ruxiang [Frankincense]; its efficacy is also similar. (Wei Shi Fang treats severed tendons from metal wounds by applying Fengxiang powder externally.)
Xuan, moves Qi and Blood, repels evil influences.
Pungent, aromatic, bitter, neutral in nature. Enters the Heart Meridian. Taken as ground powder, it moves blood and directs Qi downward, calms the Spirit and expels malevolent spirits. (The Hand-Shaoyin [Heart] meridian houses the Spirit; when the Spirit is confused, evil spirits invade. The Heart governs Blood; when Blood stagnates, Qi fails to circulate freely. By calming the Spirit and moving Blood, it treats these conditions.) It can abort "ghost fetuses" and dissolve gu poison. Burning the smoke repels evil and drives away malignancy. Do not use if the illness is not related to invasion by evil Qi. It repels all evils and settles them, hence the name. Some say it is named after the country Anxi. (Qixiao Liang Fang records that for pediatric fright-evil, burning a bean-sized amount of Anxi Xiang naturally eliminates the condition.)
Xuan, unblocks orifices and repels malignancy.
Sweet, warm in nature, penetrating and dispersing. Unblocks orifices and opens depression, repels all abnormal Qi, kills spirits/demons. Nowadays, people abuse Suheli Wan (Styrax Pill), unaware that various aromatic herbs dissipate true Qi. It is frequently seen that taking it causes mild diseases to become severe, and severe diseases to result in death. Only individuals with robust constitutions may temporarily take one or two pills; otherwise, deep caution is advised. (Bielu states it can be taken for a long time, and Bitan extols the effects of drinking Suheli wine. Alas, such statements are inappropriate and cause endless harm; this is an example.) Originates from various foreign lands. Made by boiling the juices of various aromatics together, thus also called Suheli You (Styrax Oil). Shape resembles gum/resin. Genuine product hangs in silk threads without breaking when lifted with chopsticks.
