Hu Dou (Vicia faba, Broad Bean) has a sweet taste and is non-toxic. It primarily treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst syndrome, characterized by excessive drinking, eating, urination, and emaciation). Do not boil it with salt to eat. Its seedlings resemble bean plants and grow in wild fields; they are often found mixed with rice grains.
Dong Yi (likely referring to *Setaria italica* or similar grain, contextually distinct from millet but related) has a sweet taste, is neutral in nature, and non-toxic. It benefits Qi, lightens the body, prevents hunger when taken for a long time, strengthens bones and tendons, and enables long-distance walking. It grows in the Hexi region. Its seedlings resemble *Artemisia* (Peng), and its seeds resemble *Malva* (Kui) and can be used as food. The *Book of Wei* records that Dong Yi grows there. It ripens in the ninth and tenth lunar months. The *Guang Zhi* records that Dong Yi's seeds resemble *Malva*, are greenish, and occasionally appear in Liangzhou. The colloquial speech of the Hexi people says: "Lend me Dong Yi, and I will repay you with Tianliang (millet)." ("Yi" is pronounced similarly to "Ji Yang Qie").
Mai Miao (Wheat Seedling) has a pungent taste and is cold in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats Gu Du (Gu poison). Boil it to extract the juice, filter it through fine silk, and take the decoction. ("Bi" refers to芒秕, chaff/husk, pronounced "Yu Ben Qie").
Cu (Vinegar) has an acidic taste and is non-toxic. It eliminates carbuncles and swelling, disperses water retention, and kills pathogenic toxins (Recorded in *Mingyi Bielu*). [Names] Xi, Ku Jiu (Tao Hongjing stated: Vinegar is derived from wine fermentation, penetrates everywhere, and improves with age; hence called "Xi". Due to its bitter taste, it is commonly called "Ku Jiu" [Bitter Wine]. *Yan Yi* states: Vinegar is made from wine lees; "Qi Lin Zhe" refers to this substance. However, there are types such as Rice Vinegar, Wheat Vinegar, and Date Vinegar, none of which are as mellow as Rice Vinegar. For medicinal use, Rice Vinegar is preferred because it retains the full Qi of the grain, making it superior to vinegar made from lees.) However, modern people find that consuming sour foods softens teeth; this is because Water generates Wood. When Water Qi is weak, Wood Qi becomes excessive, leading to this condition. Vinegar is necessary in tanning leather to create wrinkles, demonstrating its astringent nature, consistent with the theory that "Acidity astringes." [Storage] Store boiled vinegar in porcelain vessels. [Source] Vinegar made from rice is best. [Color] Black. [Taste] Sour. [Nature] Warm, primarily astringent. [Qi and Flavor] Thin Qi, strong flavor; Yang within Yin. [Odor] Fragrant. [Main Actions] Reduces swelling and detoxifies. [Therapeutic Applications] (*Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao*): Treats postpartum conditions in women, injuries, metallic wounds, blood syncope, descends Qi, relieves irritability, breaks up mass formations, and treats heart pain in women. (Chen Cangqi): Eliminates masses and hard accumulations, aids digestion, kills toxic pathogens, resolves stagnant Qi, and treats acid regurgitation and phlegm-fluid retention in the heart. (Meng Shen): For postpartum Qi and Blood syncope, take high-quality clear vinegar, warm slightly, and swish in the mouth until cured. (*Shi Liao Ben Cao*): Vinegar lees treat Qi stagnation and Wind obstruction causing arm and knee/leg pain. Stir-fry and wrap hot around the affected area; change every three doses until healed. (*Tang Ye Ben Cao*): Astringes throat ulcers. (*Mingyi Bielu*): For muscle cramps (Zhuan Jin), soak old cotton in strong vinegar, steam in a steamer until hot, and wrap around the patient's feet; replace when cool, do not stop. For Huo Luan (cholera-like syndrome) causing abdominal distension and pain, irritability, shortness of breath, without vomiting or diarrhea yet, drink three cups of vinegar; elderly and children may drink one to two cups, and they will heal. [Combinations for Treatment] Combine with Huang Bo Pi (Phellodendron Bark), soak and hold in mouth to treat mouth ulcers. Combine with Qing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), grind and take orally to treat sudden heart pain and Qi-Blood disorders. Combine with Sheng Da Huang (Raw Rhizoma Rhei), decoct and take to treat Pi Ji (accumulations/masses). Combine with Da Huang Fei Dan (processed Rhizoma Rhei powder) and apply topically to treat swelling. Five sheng of three-year-old strong vinegar, heat and boil for three to five minutes, add two to three sheng of chopped scallion whites, boil once more, strain, wrap in cloth, and apply hot compress to areas affected by Wind-Toxin swelling or Bai Hu Bing (White Tiger disease/severe joint pain); continue until healed. Grind Liu Huang (Sulfur) with vinegar and apply topically to stop Yang Feng (leprosy/skin sores). Apply three-year-old strong vinegar mixed with Duan Shi (calcined iron ore) to treat Hu Chou (fox odor/body malodor). Simmer Chun Cu (pure vinegar) with Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) over low heat, sharpen into a point, and insert into the ear to treat deafness with good effect. Take half a date-sized amount of Hu Fen (Lead White) mixed with vinegar orally to treat persistent epistaxis. Apply Qu Yiun Shi (Earthworm excrement) mixed with vinegar to the body and limbs to treat sudden swelling. Apply Que Shi (Sparrow excrement) mixed with vinegar to abscesses that have formed pus; if the abscess head resembles a small bean and is about to rupture, application promotes drainage. Apply Chi Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean Paste) ground into a paste topically to treat sores caused by taking Sulfur alone; change when dry. Mix one sheng of vinegar with one sheng of Gou Qi Bai Pi (Cortex Lycii) and decoct to obtain half a sheng; use for gargling to cure toothache. Soak Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) in vinegar and wipe the face frequently to gradually remove facial pigmentation or spots resembling quail eggs. Grind Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) with vinegar and apply topically to treat scorpion stings. Grind Sheng Tie (Raw Iron) with vinegar and apply topically to treat venom from centipede and spider bites. Mix Ni (Clay/Mud) with vinegar and apply topologically to treat fire burns; heals without scarring. Decoct three sheng of Da Dou (Soybeans) with vinegar and take orally to treat retained dead fetus in pregnancy before term; after ingestion, the dead fetus decomposes immediately. If not expelled, administer again. Place Jie (Mustard Seeds) together in a bowl; treat visual hallucinations of seeing mirrors, caused by excessive fish consumption. Have the patient consume while hungry, and they will recover. [Contraindications] Do not consume in excess; it damages muscles, organs, waist, and stomach, harms sinews and bones, is detrimental to men, and impairs complexion. Do not consume excessively while taking other medicines. [Antidote] Dissolves various toxins and kills all toxins from meat, fish, and vegetables. [Dietary Taboo] Do not eat together with Ge Rou (Clam Meat).
