Treats wind-induced headache, tinnitus in the head, tearing, benefits Qi, and gives luster to the complexion. (Xiao Jing Shi has equivalent effects.)
(Above text in black ink, recorded by famous physicians)
[Seedling] [*Tu Jing* states]: Grows along water banks with creeping stems and leaves; sprouts small leaves from old branches in spring. Leaves mature in May, resembling apricot leaves. Flowers appear in June, pale red with yellow stamens. Fruits ripen in September, marked with black spots, size similar to wutong seeds but hollow and light. Leaves fall in winter. [*Tang Ben Zhu* notes]: Creeping plant, leaves resemble apricot leaves but are finer, stems over one zhang long. Flowers are red and white. Modern people mistakenly identify Xiao Jing as Manjing, thus confusing Manjing Zi with Mujing Zi. [*Shu Ben Zhu* notes]: Some claim Manjing is Mujing; however, logically, creeping plants are Manjing, while arborescent plants are Mujing. The fruits of creeping types are large like wutong seeds, while those of arborescent types are small like hemp seeds. Based on current usage, the ones resembling wutong seeds and being light and hollow are indeed Manjing, confirming they are creeping plants. [*Yan Yi* states]: Various interpretations exist regarding Manjing Shi, distinguishing between Manjing, Mujing, and Fen (sound 'jiu'). Since the text mentions "creeping," it refers to a creeping plant, not a tall tree. Since it mentions Mujing, it naturally grows on trees. Furthermore, *Han Shu: Jiao Si Zhi* mentions using Mujing stems for banner poles, confirming that Manjing has larger seeds. Thus, the statement in *Tu Jing* that "creeping plants are named Manjing" implies that current specimens may not be the true creeping variety.
[Origin] [*Tu Jing* states]: Previously unrecorded; now commonly found near the capital, Qinlong, Mingzhou, and Yuezhou. [Authentic Origin]: Meizhou.
[Season] [Growth]: Leaves emerge in spring. [Harvest]: Collect fruits in August and September. [Storage]: Sun-dry. [Medicinal Part]: Fruit.
[Properties]: Resembles Bicengqie (Piperis Fructus Rotundus), slightly larger with a white membrane. Color is dark grey-black. Taste is pungent and bitter. Nature is warm, slightly cold. Aroma and flavor are both light; belongs to Yang within Yin. Odor is fragrant.
[Actions & Meridian Tropism]: Clears and benefits the head and eyes, disperses wind pathogenic factors. Enters the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian.
[Incompatibilities]: Adverse reaction with Wutou (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
[Processing] [Leigong says]: When used, remove the pedicel and scrape off the white membrane beneath the seed, using only the clean kernel. Soak in wine for one shi (approx. 2 hours), then steam from Si hour to Wei hour. Remove, sun-dry, and crush before use.
[Therapeutic Effects] [*Yao Xing Lun* says]: Expels thief-wind, promotes beard growth. [*Ri Hua Zi* says]: Unblocks joints, treats red eye and epilepsy. [*Tang Ye Ben Cao* says]: Cools blood in various meridians, stops headaches and internal eye pain.
