Externally applied to promote tissue regeneration.
Sweet and warm in nature, belonging to Metal. Promotes tissue regeneration and stops bleeding (Zheng Zanhuan said: Wang Yuzhang suffered from hematuria at the age of sixteen, and multiple treatments were ineffective. I added *Bai La* [White Wax] into blood-nourishing and kidney-tonifying herbs, and he was cured), alleviates pain and tonifies deficiency, reconnects tendons and bones, and is an essential herb for external medicine.
Internally used to purge toxins vigorously, employing toxicity to combat toxicity.
Acrid, cold, and toxic. Externally applied to escharotic dead tissue and to treat scabies, tinea, and malignant sores; internally used to break up lithiasis (stone strangury) and extract the root of scrofula and carbuncles (Yang Dengfu said: The toxin of scrofula invariably has a root. Generally, treating with *Ban Mao* [Mylabris] and *Di Dan* [Blister Beetle] as main ingredients, if processed correctly, can cause the root to be excreted via urine, appearing like powder flakes, blood clots, or rotting flesh, which verifies its efficacy. Guided by herbs such as *Mutong* [Akebia Caulis], *Huashi* [Talcum], and *Dengxincao* [Junci Medulla]. When caught, *Ban Mao* ejects foul-smelling fluid from its posterior orifice, making it unbearable to smell. Thus, it travels through the lower orifices, reaching the seat of essence and urine, capable of expelling corrupt matter, causing unbearable pain, so its use requires careful consideration), expels dog venom (a critical condition where nine out of ten die; urgently use seven *Ban Mao*, remove head, wings, and legs, stir-fry with glutinous rice until yellow, grind into powder, decoct in wine, and take on an empty stomach to expel thirty to forty small dog-like toxic entities; if fewer are expelled, administer again. Another prescription: one spoonful of glutinous rice and twenty-one *Ban Mao*, taken in three doses, stir-fried until blue smoke appears. Remove the beetles, take the rice, grind into powder, mix with cold water and a little refined oil, and take on an empty stomach. Expel toxic matter; if not purged, administer again. After recovery, avoid hearing bells and drums; relapse is incurable. If severe abdominal pain occurs after ingestion, resolve the toxicity with indigo juice or *Huanglian* [Coptidis Rhizoma] decoction), ulcerates flesh (flesh rots upon contact), and induces abortion. It is a beetle found on bean leaves, marked with yellow and black spots. Remove head and legs, stir-fry with glutinous rice until cooked; raw use causes vomiting and diarrhea. Some use only the rice to extract its qi rather than the substance itself. Averse to *Badou* [Crotonis Fructus] and *Danshen* [Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma]. Dislikes *Gancao* [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] and bean flowers (*Douhua*). (*Ban Mao* [Mylabris], *Yuan Qing* [Lyttae Mylabris], *Ge Shang Ting Zhang* [Eupolyphaga Steleophaga], and *Di Dan* [Blister Beetle] are four insects differing in appearance but having similar effects. Those feeding on *Yuanhua* [Genkwa Flos] are *Yuan Qing*, greenish-black and highly toxic, born in spring; those feeding on *Ge Hua* [Kadsurae Flos] are *Ting Zhang*, black body with red head, born in summer; those feeding on *Douhua* [Phaseoli Semen Germinatum] are *Ban Mao*, spotted, born in autumn; those entering the ground in winter are *Di Dan*, black head with red tail. Tao Hongjing stated: These are transformations of one entity across the four seasons. Su Gong disagreed, stating they are all extremely toxic and must be used with caution).
