[Shixie (Stone Crab)]
Heavy in nature, with a pungent and cold property. It has the effects of purging and brightening the eyes. It treats Qingmang (visual impairment or blindness) and corneal opacity, epidemic febrile diseases (infectious febrile conditions), and detoxifies various mineral drugs. When ground with vinegar and applied externally, it treats carbuncles and swelling. It is produced in the South Sea. Its appearance is exactly that of a crab, but its texture is like stone. It should be finely ground and used after being processed by water flotation (water flying).
[Limestone]
Heavy in nature; it harmonizes blood and promotes healing of injuries.
The salty flavor enters the Blood aspect, and the sweet flavor tonifies blood. It treats metal wounds and fractures, carbuncles, sores, and toxic swellings (applied as a paste ground with vinegar), relieves pain, and generates flesh (when humans are subjected to beating with sticks, taking three to five qian can reduce severe pain and injury). It is produced in Sichuan and Guangdong. It consists of small black stones, with hundreds in one package.
[Pishí (Arsenic Stone)]
Heavy in nature; drying, dispels cold accumulation.
Pungent and hot, possessing great toxicity. It treats hard accumulations and chronic cold syndromes, wind-bi caused by cold-dampness (Su Gong stated: it is best for treating cold diseases. *Bielu* stated: taking it unrefined causes death. This stone grows in mountains without snow and does not freeze when put in water. Li Shizhen stated: its nature and qi are similar to Pishuang. *Bowuzhi* states: storks take this stone to warm their feet while incubating eggs. This is incorrect.). There are varieties such as Chuangshi and Bai Pi. Burning them only disperses them but cannot remove their hardness. Those that do not freeze in water are authentic. It is antagonistic to sheep blood.
[Xinshi (Arsenic Trioxide/Pishuang)]
Greatly drying, seizes phlegm.
Pungent, bitter, and salty. Greatly hot and highly toxic, especially Pishuang (Arsenic Trioxide). It specializes in drying phlegm and can be used as an emetic. It treats wind-phlegm in the chest and diaphragm, interrupts malaria, and eliminates asthma. Externally, it erodes necrotic tissue, kills parasites, and withers hemorrhoids. It is produced in Xinzhou, hence the name Xinshi; those from Hengzhou are secondary. It is the mineral offspring of tin (thus tin pots are also considered toxic). Unrefined is called Pi Huang, refined is called Pi Shuang. It is inhibited by mung beans, cold water, and sheep blood.
[Duan Shi (Calcined Iron Ore/Slag)]
Heavy in nature; dries dampness, stops bleeding, generates flesh.
Pungent and warm, with a fierce nature. It solidifies substances, dissipates blood stasis, relieves pain, generates flesh, and stops bleeding from metal wounds (mixed with bile of a yellow cow in the twelfth lunar month, placed back into the gallbladder, dried in shade, and then used). It kills parasite worms (A person had a sore on the calf that became a fistula over time; all medicines failed, and he believed he would die. A villager saw it and said: This is an eel fistula. Soak, fumigate, and wash with warm Duan Shi solution; feeling itching indicates efficacy. After several washes, it healed.). It erodes malignant flesh without leaving scars (used with herbs to remove moles). Relieves wine acidity (wine merchants use it often, but wine containing ash harms people). Internally, it stops diarrhea and dysentery, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, retracts prolapse (vaginal protrusion, also called Yin Jun, or failure of the vaginal opening to close postpartum. Boil until yellow, soak in water, clarify, and wash with warm liquid); rectal prolapse; and resolves accumulations and tubercles. Weathered ones are superior.
[Kuang Hui (Graveyard Ash/Fire Ash)]
Fire toxicity has been expelled. It mainly treats stubborn ulcers with dripping pus and is excellent for closing wounds.
