[Di Fu Zi]
The flavor is bitter and cold, non-toxic. It mainly treats heat in the Bladder causing difficulty in urination, tonifies the Middle Jiao, and benefits Essence and Qi. Long-term consumption makes the ears and eyes clear and bright, lightens the body, and enhances resistance to aging.
(Di Fu Zi [Kochiae Fructus] mostly grows in marshes, flatlands, and fields. The roots grow in clusters, with each clump having twenty to thirty stems. Yellow flowers bloom in July, bearing greenish-white fruits that turn black when dried.)
Di Fu Zi has a bitter and cold flavor, inheriting the Qi transformation of Taiyang Cold Water. Therefore, it mainly treats heat in the Bladder and promotes diuresis. The Bladder resides within the Bao Zhong (uterine region), thus it tonifies the Middle and benefits the Qi of Water Essence. Long-term consumption nourishes and irrigates the body fluids, thereby making the ears and eyes clear and bright, lightening the body, and enhancing resistance to aging.
Yu Tun stated in *Yixue Zhengzhuan*: "My elder brother was seventy years old when he suffered from Lin syndrome in autumn. For over twenty days, various remedies were ineffective. Later, he obtained a prescription using Di Fu Cao..."
[Jue Ming Zi]
The flavor is salty and neutral, non-toxic. It mainly treats Qing Mang (blindness with normal-looking eyes), Mu Yin (excessive ocular discharge), skin redness, white membrane obscuring the pupil, and red eyes with tearing. Long-term consumption benefits visual brilliance and lightens the body.
(Jue Ming Zi [Cassiae Semen] is found everywhere. Seedlings emerge in early summer, with stems three or four chi high. Leaves resemble those of alfalfa, small at the base and large at the tip, opening during the day and closing at night. Pale yellow five-petaled flowers bloom in autumn, bearing pods like slender kidney beans, two to three cun long, containing dozens of seeds inside. The seeds are greenish-yellow and lustrous, shaped like horse hooves, hence named Ma Ti Jue Ming. Additionally, there is another type called Cao Jue Ming, which is Qing Xiang Zi [Celosiae Semen].)
The eyes are the orifice of the Liver. Jue Ming Zi has a salty and neutral flavor; its leaves govern opening and closing, and its seeds are purple-black and lustrous. It inherits the Qi of Taiyang Cold Water and generates the Wood of Jueyin Liver. Therefore, it mainly treats Qing Mang, Mu Yin, and skin redness. Qing Mang leads to the formation of a white membrane; skin redness refers to redness of the eyelid skin; Mu Yin leads to excessive tearing. Thus, it is said: white membrane obscuring the pupil, red eyes, and tearing. Long-term consumption fills the Water Essence, thereby benefiting visual brilliance and lightening the body.
[Chong Wei Zi]
The flavor is pungent and sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic. It mainly brightens the eyes, benefits Essence, and eliminates Damp-Fluid accumulation. Long-term consumption lightens the body.
(Chong Wei [Leonuri Herba/Fructus], known as Yi Mu in *Ben Jing*, is also named Yi Ming. In *Erya*, it is named Huan. It is found everywhere, particularly abundant near damp and wet areas. Tender shoots emerge in spring resembling young mugwort. By mid-summer, they grow three to four chi high. The stems are square, leaves resemble Artemisia argyi, and spikes arise at each node, dense and lush, hence named Chong Wei. Spikes are harvested in May, seeds in September. Each calyx contains four tiny seeds, dark brown in color.)
The stems and leaves of Chong Wei are sweet and cold, while the seeds are pungent and warm. *Ben Jing* records them as pungent, sweet, and slightly warm, referring generally to both the herb and the fruit. The square stems and black seeds, thriving in wetlands, inherit the Qi transformation of Earth and Water. They brighten the eyes and benefit Essence by acquiring Water Qi. They eliminate Damp-Fluid because Earth Qi is prosperous. Long-term consumption fills and strengthens Essence and Qi, thus lightening the body.
