[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, cold, toxic.
[Indications] Treats toothache accompanied by worms (or a sensation of foreign bodies in the teeth), muscle bi-syndrome with stiffness and spasms. Long-term use makes the body light, enables vigorous walking, running speed comparable to galloping horses, strengthens willpower and physical strength, enhances spiritual clarity leading to hallucinations (such as seeing spirits), but excessive consumption causes madness and erratic running. ("Lang" is pronounced "lang", "Dang" sounds like "dang".)
Hyoscyamus niger (Tianxianzi) is also known as Tianxianzi. *Bielu* states: It grows in coastal valleys and Yongzhou region, and is now found everywhere. The leaves resemble Isatis indigotica (Songlan), both stems and leaves have fine white hairs. It flowers purple or white in April. In May, it bears fruit with shells, resembling small pomegranates; the seeds inside are very fine, greenish-white, like millet grains.
Hyoscyamus niger has a bitter flavor and cold nature. Growing by the sea, it inherits the Qi of Taiyang Cold Water, thus treating toothache. The Taiyang channel receives cold Qi from above and has marked Yang below; Yang can disperse Yin, thus eliminating worms (or removing Yin pathogens causing toothache). The Yang-heat Qi of Taiyang warms the muscle and interstices. Furthermore, the Taiyang channel governs diseases of the sinews, thus treating muscle bi-syndrome and sinus stiffness. Muscle bi-syndrome refers to myopathy; stiffness refers to non-flexible sinews. Long-term use making the body light, enabling vigorous walking and running speed comparable to galloping horses, occurs because the Taiyang channel's root is cold and its branch is hot, while the Shaoyin channel's root is hot and its branch is cold. The Taiyang and Shaoyin channels interact to assist the vessels. Specifically, the Yang Qiao vessel is a collateral branch of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel, originating from the middle of the heel and emerging at the lateral malleolus. The Yin Qiao vessel is a collateral branch of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel, coursing along the medial malleolus. Hyoscyamus niger inherits the essence of the root and branch of Taiyang and Shaoyin, assisting the Qiao vessels, thus resulting in such lightness and agility. Inheriting Yin essence Qi strengthens willpower and increases strength; inheriting Yang-heat transformation enhances spiritual clarity and induces hallucinations. As a lower-grade herb, it should not be used long-term. Hence it says: Excessive consumption causes madness and erratic running; this is a warning.
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, acrid, cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Treats alternating chills and fever, scrofula (luoli), neck sores, breaks up masses and nodules, resolves stagnant Qi in the neck, reduces foot swelling, treats damp-bi syndrome, and lightens the body. (Note: "Neck" was erroneously printed as "head" in old texts; corrected here.)
(Prunella vulgaris, named Xiju in *Shennong Bencao Jing*, also called Naidong, is abundant in fields and marshes everywhere. Sprouts appear after Winter Solstice. Leaves grow opposite on nodes, resembling leaves of Farfarae Flos (Xuanfu) but with fine serrations, white underneath. Seedlings are about one to two chi high. Stems are slightly square. In March and April, spikes form at stem tips, one to two cun long, bearing pale purple flowers resembling Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) flowers. Each calyx contains four fine seeds. The plant withers after Summer Solstice.)
Prunella vulgaris inherits the Qi of Metal and Water, hence its bitter, acrid, cold nature and non-toxicity. It treats alternating chills and fever, scrofula, and neck sores by using its Water-derived Qi to ascend and clear heat-fire internally. It breaks up masses, nodules, and stagnant Qi in the neck by utilizing its Metal-derived Qi to dissolve hard accumulations internally. Foot swelling results from Water Qi failing to ascend; damp-bi results from Water Qi failing to distribute externally. Prunella vulgaris germinates upon sensing the arrival of Yang Qi, enabling Water Qi to ascend and circulate. Thus, it treats podagra (Hongkong foot/foot disease) and damp-bi, and lightens the body.
