[Polygoni Pollen]
The flavor is sweet and neutral, non-toxic. It treats cold-heat conditions in the heart, abdomen, and bladder; promotes urination; stops bleeding; and resolves blood stasis. Long-term consumption lightens the body, boosts qi and strength, and extends life to that of an immortal.
(Pu refers to Typha orientalis, a water plant. Puhuang is the pollen dust from the flower spikes of Typha, fine as gold powder. Modern pharmacies sometimes substitute it with pine pollen, so distinction is necessary. It originally grew in the ponds and marshes of Hedong, but is now found everywhere, with those from Qinzhou being superior. In early spring, tender leaves emerge, appearing reddish-white above the water, fuzzy to the touch. By summer, flower stalks rise among the dense leaves, with flowers clustered at the tip like a warrior's mallet, hence the colloquial name "Pu Chui" [Cattail Mallet].)
Typha grows in water; its yellow color and sweet taste indicate it embodies the essence of earth and water, thereby harmonizing qi and blood. Its treatment of cold-heat in the heart, abdomen, and bladder and its promotion of urination stem from its embodiment of the essence of earth, which unblocks and regulates the water passages, allowing cold-heat pathogens in the heart, abdomen, and bladder to exit via urine, thus harmonizing qi dynamics. Its ability to stop bleeding and resolve blood stasis stems from its embodiment of the essence of water, which nourishes Liver Wood, thereby stopping fresh bleeding and resolving stasis, harmonizing the blood vessels. Long-term consumption ensures sufficient water qi and abundant earth qi, resulting in a lightened body, boosted qi and strength, and extended longevity.
[Chrysanthemi Flos]
The flavor is bitter and neutral, non-toxic. It treats various types of wind-stroke causing dizziness, headache, and swelling; sensation of eyes protruding; tearing; dead skin and muscle; and painful obstruction caused by evil wind-dampness. Long-term consumption benefits qi and blood, lightens the body, and enhances resistance to aging for longevity.
(Chrysanthemum is found everywhere, with those from Jutan in Nanyang being the best. There are many varieties; those cultivated with large flower heads are only for ornamental purposes. Those growing wild in mountains, fields, and marshes do not produce seed heads (do not form "louzi"), and come only in yellow and white colors. Only those named "Cha Ju" [Tea Chrysanthemum] are suitable for medicinal use, with those having a sweet flavor being superior. Ancient texts state: "Sweet chrysanthemum prolongs life, bitter chrysanthemum drains the person," so distinction is crucial. The flavors and indications in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* refer generally to the stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, but nowadays only the flowers are used.)
In the *Shennong Bencao Jing*, Chrysanthemum is called "Jie Hua" because it blooms in accordance with the Double Ninth Festival. The *Yueling* states: "In the ninth month, chrysanthemums have yellow flowers." Its stems and leaves are bitter, while the flowers are both bitter and sweet, with yellow and white colors, embodying the transformation of Yangming Autumn Metal Qi. Its treatment of wind-stroke causing dizziness, headache, and swelling works because it embodies Metal Qi to subdue Wind. The sensation of eyes protruding and tearing indicates that wind-fire flares upward into the eyes, causing extreme pain and tearing. Chrysanthemum embodies the clear and肃 (solemn/clearing) Qi of Autumn Metal, capable of treating the fire-heat of Wind-Wood. Dead skin and muscle, and painful obstruction from evil wind-dampness, refer to bi-syndromes caused by pathogenic wind-dampness, leading to necrotic skin and muscle. Chrysanthemum embodies Metal Qi to treat wind in the skin, and simultaneously possesses Yangming Earth Qi to treat dampness in the muscles. The qi and blood of the whole body originate from the Yangming Stomach Fu, so long-term consumption benefits qi and blood and lightens the body; when qi and blood are benefited, the body becomes light.
