Taste and Nature: Bitter, neutral, cold, toxic. Indications: Alternating chills and fever (Hanre Wanglai), scrofula (Shuluo - tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck), malignant sores, carbuncles, hemorrhoids, necrotic muscle tissue (Simi). It can kill spirits and evil ghosts, dispel various pathogenic factors and insect poisons, withstand weapons, and when refined and ingested, it can lighten the body and lead to immortality.
(The *Bielu* states: Realgar is produced in the valleys of Mount Huang in Wudu. Wudu was inhabited by the Di and Qiang tribes, known as Qiuchi, later named Jiazhou, bordering the Western Rong regions. Dangchang also produces realgar, but of slightly inferior quality. Mount Huang is located thousands of li west of Liangzhou. Recently, realgar from Shimen is called "New Pit," representing the newly exploited high-quality stone yellow. Jiazhou also produces a type of "water cave realgar," which grows in mountain rocks where water flows; its color is deep red with a slight purple tint, its texture is extremely light and porous, and its efficacy is supreme. *Baopuzi* states: Realgar should be obtained from pure, unadulterated sources in the mountains of Wudu, shaped like cinnabar, red as a rooster's comb, and shining brightly; only this kind is usable. Those that are dark green-black and hard are called Xunhuang (Smoked Yellow). Those that resemble the genuine product in color and shape but have an offensive odor are called Chouhuang (Stinking Yellow); neither is used for internal administration but only for treating sores and scabies. Diamond crystals grow within realgar deposits; if pregnant women wear realgar, it can transform females into males.)
Realgar has a yellow color and firm texture, resembling cinnabar, with a shimmering luster. It embodies the qi transformation of Earth and Metal, serving as a herb that disperses yin pathogens and resolves toxicity. When water toxicity ascends, it causes alternating chills and fever and cervical scrofula. Realgar, embodying Earth qi, overcomes water toxicity, thus treating these conditions. When liver blood becomes stagnant, it generates malignant sores leading to carbuncles and hemorrhoids. Realgar, embodying Metal qi, pacifies the Liver, thus treating these conditions. Necrotic muscle tissue refers to insensate skin and flesh. Spirits and evil ghosts belong to yin-type pathogens. Realgar, embodying Fire qi and possessing brightness, treats necrotic muscle tissue and kills spirits and evil ghosts. Various pathogenic factors and insect poisons are resolved upon encountering Earth qi. Since Realgar is yellow and belongs to Earth, it kills insect poisons. The phrase "withstands five weapons" is analogous to how Sulfur can melt gold, silver, copper, iron, and tin. "Five weapons" refers to the five metals (gold, silver, copper, iron, tin). "Withstanding five weapons" implies abundant Fire qi. After refining and ingestion, rigidity transforms into flexibility, and golden light is stored inwardly, thus lightening the body and achieving immortality.
