Use after stir-frying with vinegar.
Sweet, neutral, warm, bitter, non-toxic. [Sanleng] disperses all blood stasis and opens various qi stagnations. It possesses the ability to unblock menstruation and induce abortion, and excels in relieving pain and reducing swelling.
For accumulated masses and solidified knots, there is no other remedy; for hard sores and swellings, without this herb, efficacy is lacking.
It is found in Jingxiang, Jianghuai, Jinan, Heshan, etc., mostly growing in wasteful ponds, marshes, and wetlands. In spring, it grows in clusters; in summer and autumn, it sends up stems, from the tips of which several leaves sprout again. The flowers, numbering six or seven, are finely fragmented into spikes, yellowish-purple in color, containing fine seeds. Its stem, leaves, flowers, and fruits all have three edges, similar to those of Xiangfu (Cyperus Rotundus, Cyperi Rhizoma), but larger. Its roots have many fibrous roots; after scraping off the skin, they resemble crucian carp. Nowadays, what is used worldwide is the red cattail root from Huainan, which is extremely hard, and its stem, leaves, flowers, and fruits no longer have three edges. Carved into fish shapes due to historical deviations, distinctions are no longer made.
For pi qi masses, combine with Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Roukou (Myristicae Semen), and Binglang (Arecae Semen), adding a small amount of Sharen (Amomi Fructus) to make pills. (Verified Formula 1.)
If pi disease does not heal and the hypochondrium feels hard as stone, combine with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), grind into powder, and boil with vinegar to make a paste. Take with ginger and chenpi decoction until bowel movement occurs. (2.)
For pediatric qi pi, decoct the juice and make into soup or porridge. (3.)
Sanleng Decoction: Sanleng (one jin), decoct with water, remove dregs, and further boil until thick like syrup. Take one spoonful with wine every morning. Treats zheng jia (masses) and abdominal distension. (First of Various Formulas.)
Remove hairs, process with four methods: wine, vinegar, child's urine, and salt water.
Sweet, bitter, slightly cold, non-toxic. It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian and Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian. It regulates all qi and blood, stops various pains. Resolves emotional depression, clears pathogenic heat from the chest and abdomen. Treats cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, phlegm-fluid retention and fullness. Promotes digestion and attacks accumulations, treats metrorrhagia and leucorrhea, regulates menstruation and manages pregnancy and childbirth, soothes carbuncles and heals sores.
Grows everywhere. Leaves resemble old chives but are harder, with edges, usable for raincoats. In May and June, a single stem emerges, hollow with three edges; at the tip, several leaves reappear, blooming blue flowers into spikes resembling millet, containing fine seeds. Roots have fibers, under which tubers form, reproducing cyclically. Mostly grows in fields. Harvested in February and August.
