**Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix):**
It works well with Fa (Hair Charcoal) and is incompatible with Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix).
[Its flavor is] bitter and sour, [its nature is] slightly cold. Its property is astringent and sinking; it is a medicine for the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner). It treats all types of blood loss and simultaneously clears heat in the blood. It is contraindicated for those with deficiency-cold diarrhea and dysentery.
It grows everywhere. The perennial root sprouts seedlings in March. Initially, they spread along the ground, with a single stem growing straight up. Leaves emerge opposite each other on the branches. The leaves resemble elm leaves but are slightly narrower, long and slender with serrated edges resembling saw teeth. In July, it flowers with purple-black blooms. The root is black on the outside and red on the inside, resembling willow roots.
For hematemesis (vomiting blood), decoct 3 liang in vinegar and take. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For metrorrhagia with mixed red and white discharge. Use the same method as above. (No. 2.)
For bloody or non-bloody dysentery, decoct 0.5 jin in water, remove the dregs, and further boil until thick like maltose syrup. Take in divided doses for efficacy. For bloody dysentery, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 liang; robust patients will recover immediately. (No. 3.)
For lower gastrointestinal bleeding with abdominal pain, decoct together with Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root) and Sharen (Amomi Fructus) and take. (No. 4.)
For infantian dysentery (malnutrition-associated dysentery in children), decoct in water and take like maltose syrup. (No. 5.)
For bites from tigers or dogs, take internally and apply externally. Avoid alcohol. (No. 6.)
For snakebites, apply externally and take internally. (No. 7.)
For swelling and pain of "Dai Zhi" (paronychia/infection of the fingernail bed), decoct to make juice, soak the affected area, and it will heal within half a day. (No. 8.)
For infantile eczema, decoct in water and wash. (No. 9.)
For infantile facial sores and redness/swelling, decoct and wash. (No. 10.)
Method for Cooking Stones: On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, collect Di Yu and dry it in the shade. After one hundred days, burn it to ash. Then take fresh Di Yu, combine it with the ash, and pound ten thousand times. Mix three parts of the ash with one part of the fresh powder.
If there is one or two dou of stone, immerse it in water covering it by three cun. Add the medicine to the water and stir. Boil until the stone disintegrates and becomes edible, then stop. (No. 11.)
**Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma):**
It fears salty water and is inversely compatible with Lilu (Veratri Nigrum Rhizoma).
[Its flavor is] slightly bitter, [its qi is] neutral and descending. It enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian. It breaks old blood, generates new blood, calms the fetus during pregnancy, expels dead fetuses, regulates the menses, and removes irritability and heat. It stops borborygmus and abdominal pain, and manages conditions of metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, and masses. Its efficacy is similar to Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), making it an essential herb for gynecology.
It grows in Tongbai and Mount Tai. It is harvested in May. Now it grows in mountains everywhere. One stem has five leaves; the leaves resemble wild perilla but are pointed, with green color and wrinkled skin. Small flowers form spikes. The root bark is red, and the flesh is purple.
For regulating menstruation in all cases, use Dan Shen San (Salvia Powder) alone, taken with wine, 3 qian per dose. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For severe abdominal pain due to cold hernia, grind into powder, take 2 qian with wine. This addresses accumulation in the lower abdomen. (No. 2.)
For infantile convulsions, epilepsy, and fever, decoct together with Leiwan (Polygalae Semen) and pig fat, and massage onto the body. (No. 3.)
For mastitis, combine with Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), marinate in vinegar overnight, decoct with pig fat into a plaster, remove dregs, and apply. (No. 4.)
