Salty, cold, non-toxic. It purges heat and promotes water metabolism, softens hardness and resolves phlegm. It eliminates goiter (thyroid enlargement) and scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis), and relieves hernia with knotting. It reduces edema and promotes urination and defecation, treats running piglet syndrome (a sensation of qi rushing up from the lower abdomen to the chest/throat), and heals Hong Kong foot (gouty arthritis or severe foot swelling/pain). It is effective for various diseases involving phlegm obstruction in the diaphragm, as well as carbuncles and retained food stagnation.
Its ability to direct qi downward and eliminate goiter is similar to that of Sargassum Herba (Haise Zao).
Sargassum Herba grows in the East Sea, harvested in July; it is now available in Dengzhou and Laizhou prefectures. It is black like disheveled hair.
[Sargassum Wine] Take one jin (approx. 500g) of Sargassum Herba, place it in a silk bag, soak it in wine for several days, consume it all, then prepare another batch. The dregs can be made into pills. It treats goiter qi and scrofula.
Boil to remove the salty taste, dry by baking before use.
Salty, cold, non-toxic. Treats edema, goiter, yin-cold accumulation, and diaphragmatic dysphagia; its efficacy is similar to Sargassum Herba.
It grows in the East Sea. Li Shizhen said: It grows in Dengzhou and Laizhou, resembling ropes when rubbed. Those from Fujian and Zhejiang are large, resembling vegetables.
For goiter qi and scrofula, grind into powder, take one qian (approx. 3-5g) per dose, wrap in cotton, soak in vinegar, hold in the mouth and swallow the juice, replace when the flavor fades. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For diaphragmatic dysphagia, hold and swallow the juice. (No. 2.)
Remove the head and roots, soak in wine, sun-dry until crisp, or steam before use. Lu Ying (Euphorbia lathyris) is an assistant herb; it is incompatible with Gypsum Fibrosum (Ning Shui Shi) and Crotonis Fructus (Ba Dou); it fears Ophiocordyceps Sinensis (Lei Wan) and Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiang Can).

It grows on rocks beside water in valleys of Lu'an. Harvest stems in July and August; those with golden color are best. It is also found in the marshes of Jingxiang and Jiangzuo. It grows in clusters on rocks; its roots are intricately tangled and become soft when dry. Stems and leaves are green when fresh, turning yellow when dry. It bears red flowers. Roots sprout naturally from the nodes. People also break off branches and plant them in sand and stones. Short ones with solid centers are Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu); long ones with hollow centers are Muhu. Muhu is not used in powders or pills.
Remove hairs thoroughly, steam with honey before use, or bake. Avoid iron. This is Mao Jiang, also known as Shen Jiang.
Bitter, warm, non-toxic. Enters the Heart Meridian of Hand-Shaoyin and the Liver/Gallbladder Meridians of Hand-Foot-Jueyin. It specifically treats traumatic injuries and is best for tonifying kidney deficiency. It treats tinnitus and toothache; it breaks blood stasis and stops bleeding.
