[Supplement to Bencao (Compendium of Materia Medica)]: A fruit is produced in Luzon Island, named "Jiwa Nong" (Gawa Nong). It has fleshy outer skin and a hard inner core, with a bitter taste that makes it inedible. Initially, only the people in a remote deep mountainous area were unfamiliar with it. After travelers had been on the island for a century, they began to know that its fruit could be used medicinally. In the last thirty years, its efficacy in treating various diseases has become well known, yielding extremely miraculous results. Consequently, it was brought to China. If the skin and flesh of the fruit are used, the effect is even more rapid; some call it "Bao Dou" (Treasure Bean). "Dou" refers to the shape of the fruit; "Bao" indicates its ability to treat poisoning or ingestion of toxins. Grind or scrape the fruit, mix with clear water or clear oil, and take orally; the toxin will be vomited out immediately. For injuries caused by snakes, scorpions, centipedes, etc., grind the fruit, mix with water, take orally, and have the patient lie down. For abdominal pain and diarrhea, grind and mix with water to take. When malaria first starts, grind and mix with water to take. For knife or axe wounds, it stops bleeding and relieves pain immediately. For ascariasis and malnutrition caused by roundworms, grind and mix with water to take, causing the worms to be vomited out. For difficult labor, grind and mix with water to take. For head sores with itching and ulceration, chop La Li (a type of pear), fry this fruit with oil, apply hot over the affected area while facing the fire for warmth, then take a cloth heated over the fire, cover the patient's body with it, let them sleep, and cover with a quilt avoiding wind exposure; it will heal. For tidal fever, grind and mix with water to take; symptoms gradually decrease until recovery.
