毗陵刘霁轩先生讳焕章，任浪穷令，有天生磺纪，略曰∶浪穷东城外五里，有温泉焉。
乃昆
明海洱之委也，周遭三四里许，泉底产硫磺，水热如汤，投以鸡蛋可熟。中流峙一平岩，名
九气台，中空而旁穴，穴凡九，温泉注其内，其气熏蒸，上浮于石，沾濡流浃，如垂乳然，
积时既久，质渐坚，色甚莹白，历数百余年，其色灰苍，堆聚岩下， 玲珑，与巧石相似
。土人凿取之以为药，其性大温补命门真火，虚寒等症服之，厥效如神。盖硫黄泉之热气所
结，质最轻清，又久而后成，故功效远过于石硫黄也。今土人建文星阁于九气台上，为浪邑
胜迹云。
治膈症∶补命门火衰，余功同倭黄。
按∶西儒高一志空际格致云∶硫黄有人造者，有天生者。天生者外如灰色，内如黄泥而
淡，
其体浓肥，其味苦咸，其气臭毒，其性造热，故近火则易为养也。
出东洋琉球日本吕宋等国，以日本者佳。其色白似蜜，气不臭烈，光润而嫩，高濂四时
修合
方云∶舶上硫黄，倭夷海船上作灰涂缝者佳。人不多见，俱以市硫有油者用，舶硫色如蜜者
，黄中有金红处。如七月石榴皮，打开俨若水晶有光，全非松脆性如石硬者真。按∶硫出内
地者，取土与油煎熬而成。气腥触鼻，作老黄色，倭产者嫩白，濒湖集解但引庚辛玉册所载
石土二种，于倭硫却无考据，仅云倭舶者佳。不知倭硫黄与内地迥别也。其附方内所载本事
方之阴证伤寒，博济方之阴阳二毒，瑞竹堂方之酒 赤鼻，宣明方之鼻面紫风，皆用舶上硫
黄者，断不可以内地台黄代用，故补着其功于左。 百草镜∶白硫黄出琉球国，名倭硫黄。
洋舶带来，质坚如石，不臭，光润滑泽，形如滴乳者真。 物理小识∶舶硫如蜜，黄中有金
红处，击开如水晶有光，今青硫不佳也。盖阳气入地，遇水则死为硫，升云则爆为雷，乃生
养万物之源。故以金红者为第一种，但须善制耳，遇硫毒，研釜底煤泡汤饮，以煤为火之宅
。硫本阳火，见而服也。 岳鹾使秀峰先生曾语予曰∶在京师见倭黄，如梅花式，成饼，色
亦不甚白，握手中置耳畔，听之索索作声，如虫鸣云。此种系倭舶来者，特笔于此以候考。
性大热，味微酸，有小毒，补下元，助阳道，益命门火衰，于老人尤宜。灭斑杀虫，治
疮通
暖肚封脐膏∶周氏家宝云∶夏天贴之，秋后不生痢疾。用韭菜子、蛇床子、大附子各一
两，
肉桂一两、川椒三两、倭硫黄一两、麝香三分、独蒜一枚、麻油三斤，入粗药浸半月，熬
至枯色，去渣，熬至滴水成珠，再加黄丹十二两，再熬俟冷，加细药听用。孕妇忌贴。
登仙膏∶万氏家抄云∶此药存精不漏，固体壮阳，强形健力，凡交不泄，可采十女之精，
兼
治腰疼。下元虚损，五劳七伤，半身不遂，膀胱疝气，下焦冷气，小肠偏坠，又治二三十年
脚腿疼麻，阳事不举，妇人白带血淋，阴痛血崩，皆宜贴之。麻油一斤四两，入甘草二两，
熬至六分，下诸药。第一下芝麻四两。第二下甘草二钱。第三下天门冬酒浸去心，麦冬、远
志、俱酒浸去心、生地酒洗、熟地酒蒸、牛膝去芦酒浸、蛇床子酒洗、虎骨酥炙、菟丝子酒
浸、鹿茸酥炙、肉苁蓉酒洗去甲膜、川续断、紫稍花、木鳖子去壳、杏仁去皮尖、谷精草、
官桂去皮，各三钱。文武火熬至枯黑色，去渣，下飞过黄丹半斤。第四下松香八两、槐柳枝
不住手搅、滴水不散。第五下倭硫黄、雄黄、龙骨、赤石脂、各为末二钱，再上火熬半时。
第六下乳香、没药、木香、母丁香各末五钱，再熬，离火放温。第七下蟾酥、麝香、阳起石
各二钱，滴水不散。第八下黄占一两，用瓷罐盛之，以蜡封口。入井中浸三日，去火毒，用
红绢摊贴脐上，如行房欲泄，以妇人唾津润去膏药即泄。便有孕。（应昌按∶御女之说，适
足以找生也，种子之说∶亦足以导淫也，贻误多而成功少，观者慎诸。）
宝珠膏∶行箧检秘∶此药能助筋骨，补血长肌固元。未贴此膏之前，先用擦久易丹擦腰
眼，
三日后再贴此膏。赤石脂、天冬、麦冬、生地、熟地、紫稍花、蛇床子、鹿茸、谷精草、防
风、元参、浓朴、虎骨、菟丝子、木香、各一两。母丁香、肉桂、川断、赤芍、黄 、肉苁
蓉、白龙骨、杜仲、各一钱五分。附子一个，生用，蓖麻子一百粒、去油，穿山甲一钱五分
，地龙去土二钱，木鳖去壳不去油切片，倭硫黄，没药，各一钱，血竭一钱，乳香二钱，松
香黄蜡各四钱，麝香少许，用麻油二斤，将药入油浸，三日后入锅内熬至黑色，去渣，用槐
柳枝搅，次下黄蜡松香，再下细药油，滴水成珠不散为度。瓷器收之，绢缎布摊贴腰眼，其
效如神。
擦久易丹∶肉苁蓉、良姜、蛇床子、丁香、马兰花、韶脑各一两。木鳖蟾酥少许，为末。
炼
蜜为丸，如弹子大，每用一丸。擦腰眼千百遍，软绢绸护之，一日不解，三日后，贴前宝珠
膏。
七宝丹∶高濂修合方∶治久患泻痢，疗不瘥者，服之即效，老人及脾泄滑，宜服。用附
子童
便和黄泥炮五钱、当归一两、干姜五钱、吴茱萸、浓朴、姜制花椒各三钱，舶硫黄八钱，七
味为末，米醋合成两团，白面和外衣，裹药在内，如烧饼包糖一般，文武火 面熟，去面捣
为末，蜜丸桐子大。诸痢，米汤下二十丸，空心日午服，宿食气痛不消，姜盐汤下。
神效干丹∶演揲儿集∶此药坚阳益肾，强筋力，和血脉，种子如神。天雄三钱去皮尖、
雄精
三钱、鸦片三钱、蟾酥三钱、母丁香大者四粒、人参三钱、樟脑瓦上升净霜三钱、乳香没药
去油各五分、倭硫黄三钱，共研细末，用绢罗裹，外麝香二钱，研极细，另包，将白芨不拘
多少，以敷用为度，放碗内，用滚水泡开。将白芨装入绢袋内，拧汁去渣，再用苏合油三钱
，同白芨汁和药调匀，将麝香末洒上，做成锭放瓷盒内阴干，或将口封固略晒，俟干研擦。
翦根丸∶经验广集∶治胃气，一服除根，冷痛尤效。元胡索、胡椒、五灵脂、白豆蔻各
五钱
，倭黄，如无用石硫黄，水浸，早晚换水，取出，用瓷器熔数沸，于土地上候冷，再用水泡
过洗净，一两，木香切片晒干二钱五分，研细末，拌匀收贮。体壮者服一分，弱者八厘，老
人幼童五厘，取温烧酒半小钟调服，入密室，一切食物不可吃，待次日吃稀米汤，至五日后
方可吃干饭，永不再发，孕妇忌服。
毗陵刘霁轩先生名焕章，担任浪穷县令时，有关于天生磺（天然硫黄）的记载，大致如下：浪穷县城东五里处，有一处温泉。这是昆明海洱湖的支流汇聚之地，周围约三四里，泉底出产硫磺，水温热如沸水，投入鸡蛋即可煮熟。水流中央耸立着一块平坦的岩石，名为九气台，中间空心而四周有孔洞，共有九个孔洞，温泉水注入其中，热气蒸腾，上浮至石面，湿润流淌，如同下垂的乳汁一般。经过很长时间，质地逐渐变硬，颜色非常莹白，历经数百年后，颜色变为灰苍色，堆积在岩石下方，形状玲珑剔透，与奇巧的石头相似。当地人开采它作为药物，其药性大温，能补益命门真火，对于虚寒等病症服用，效果神奇。这是因为硫黄泉的热气凝结而成，质地最轻清，又经过长时间才形成，所以功效远超过矿石硫黄。如今当地人在九气台上修建了文星阁，成为浪穷县的名胜古迹。
按语：西方传教士高一志在《空际格致》中说道：硫黄有人造的，也有天生的。天生的硫黄外表呈灰色，内部像淡黄色的泥土，其体质浓重肥厚，味道苦咸，气味臭毒，性质燥热，所以靠近火则容易熔化。
产自东洋琉球、日本、吕宋等国，以日本的为佳。其色白如蜜，气味不臭烈，光泽柔嫩。高濂在《四时修合方》中说：舶上硫黄（进口硫黄），是倭夷在海船上用作涂缝灰泥的为好。人们很少见到，都用市场上带油的硫黄代替。真正的舶上硫黄色如蜜，黄中带金红色，像七月的石榴皮一样，打开后俨然像有光泽的水晶，完全不像松脆且硬如石头的假硫黄。按语：内地出产的硫黄，是用土和油煎熬而成的。气味腥臭刺鼻，呈老黄色。倭产硫黄则嫩白，《濒湖集解》只引用了《庚辛玉册》所载的石硫黄和土硫黄两种，对倭硫黄没有考证，仅说倭国进口的为佳。不知道倭硫黄与内地硫黄截然不同。在其附方中记载的本事方的阴证伤寒、博济方的阴阳二毒、瑞竹堂方的酒齄赤鼻、宣明方的鼻面紫风，都使用舶上硫黄，绝对不可以用内地的台硫黄代替，所以补充记录其功效于左。
《百草镜》记载：白硫黄出自琉球国，名叫倭硫黄。由洋船带来，质地坚硬如石，无臭味，光润滑泽，形状像滴乳的是真品。
《物理小识》记载：舶上硫黄如蜜，黄中带金红色，敲击开后像有光泽的水晶。现在的青硫黄不好。因为阳气进入地下，遇到水就死亡变成硫黄，升腾为云则爆裂为雷，这是生养万物的源头。所以以金红色者为第一种，但必须善于炮制。遇到硫黄中毒，研磨锅底煤泡汤饮用，因为煤是火的宅邸。硫黄本是阳火，见日而服也。
岳盐运使秀峰先生曾告诉我：在北京见过倭硫黄，呈梅花状，结成饼形，颜色也不太白，握在手中放在耳边听，发出索索的声音，像虫鸣一样。这种是倭国船只运来的，特意记录下来以供考证。其药性大热，味道微酸，有小毒，补益下元，助阳道，益命门火衰，对老年人尤其适宜。能灭斑杀虫，治疗疮疡。
通暖肚封脐膏：周氏家宝记载：夏天贴敷，秋后不生痢疾。用韭菜子、蛇床子、大附子各一两，肉桂一两、川椒三两、倭硫黄一两、麝香三分、独蒜一枚、麻油三斤，将粗药浸泡半个月，熬至枯色，去渣，再熬至滴水成珠，再加黄丹十二两，继续熬制，待冷却后，加入细药备用。孕妇忌贴。

Mr. Liu Jixuan (Liu Huanzhang) from Biling, who served as the magistrate of Langqiong, left a record regarding natural sulfur (Tiansheng Huang), which states roughly as follows: Five miles east of Langqiong county town, there is a hot spring. It is the convergence of the branches of Lake Erhai in Kunming, covering an area of about three to four li around. Sulfur is produced at the bottom of the spring; the water is hot like boiling soup, and an egg thrown in can be cooked. In the middle of the flow stands a flat rock named Ji Qi Tai (Nine-Air Terrace). It is hollow in the center with holes on the sides, totaling nine holes. Hot spring water flows into them, steam rises and condenses on the stone surface, dripping down like hanging milk. After a long time, the substance hardens and becomes very translucent white. After hundreds of years, it turns grayish and accumulates under the rock, appearing exquisite and similar to strange stones. Locals mine it for medicinal use. Its nature is greatly warming and tonifies the True Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life). For deficiency-cold syndromes, its efficacy is miraculous. This is because it is formed by the condensation of heat from the sulfur spring; its texture is light and clear, and it takes a long time to form, so its efficacy far exceeds that of mineral sulfur. Currently, locals have built the Wenxing Pavilion on Ji Qi Tai, making it a scenic spot in Langqiong.
Treating Ge Syndrome (obstruction of the chest and diaphragm): Tonifies the decline of Mingmen fire; other effects are the same as Wa Sulfur (Japanese sulfur).
Note: The Western scholar Gao Yizhi (Adam Schall von Bell) stated in *Kongji Gezhi* (Investigation of Things in the Sky): There is man-made sulfur and natural sulfur. Natural sulfur appears gray on the outside and pale yellow mud-like inside. Its body is dense and thick, its taste is bitter and salty, its odor is foul and toxic, and its nature is heating, so it melts easily near fire.
It comes from Eastern countries such as Ryukyu, Japan, and Luzon, with Japanese sulfur being the best. Its color is white like honey, without a strong foul odor, glossy and tender. Gao Lian in *Sishi Xiuhe Fang* (Prescriptions for Four Seasons Preparation) said: "Bo Shang Liu Huang" (Ship-borne sulfur), used by the Wa barbarians as grout for ship seams, is the best. People rarely see it; they usually use market sulfur containing oil. Genuine ship-borne sulfur is honey-colored, with golden-red spots within the yellow. Like the skin of a pomegranate in July, when opened, it looks like lustrous crystal, completely unlike the loose, brittle, and stone-hard fake sulfur. Note: Sulfur produced inland is made by frying earth and oil. It has a fishy smell that irritates the nose and is old yellow in color. Wa-produced sulfur is tender and white. *Binhu Jijie* only cites the two types of stone and earth sulfur recorded in *Gengxin Yuce*, lacking documentation on Wa sulfur, merely stating that Wa imports are best. It does not realize that Wa sulfur is entirely different from inland sulfur. In the attached prescriptions, Ben Shi Fang's Yin Syndrome Cold Damage, Bo Ji Fang's Yin-Yang Two Poisons, Ruizhu Tang Fang's Wine Nasal Redness, and Xuan Ming Fang's Nasal-Facial Purple Wind all use ship-borne sulfur. It absolutely cannot be replaced by inland Tai sulfur. Therefore, I supplement its efficacy here.
*Bai Cao Jing*: White sulfur comes from Ryukyu, named Wa Sulfur. Brought by foreign ships, it is hard as stone, odorless, glossy and smooth. Those shaped like dripping milk are genuine.
*Wuli Xiaoshi*: Ship-borne sulfur is like honey, with golden-red spots in the yellow. When struck open, it shines like crystal. Current green sulfur is inferior. Yang energy enters the ground; meeting water, it dies and becomes sulfur; rising as clouds, it explodes as thunder. It is the source of generating and nourishing all things. Thus, those with golden-red hues are considered the first grade, but must be properly processed. In case of sulfur poisoning, grind pot-bottom coal and drink the decoction, as coal is the dwelling of fire. Sulfur is originally Yang fire; taking it after exposure to sunlight is effective.
Commissioner Yue Cuofu (Xiu Feng) once told me: In Beijing, I saw Wa sulfur shaped like plum blossoms, formed into cakes, not very white. Holding it in hand and placing it to the ear, one hears a rustling sound like insects chirping. This type was imported by Wa ships; I record it here for verification. Its nature is greatly hot, taste slightly sour, slightly toxic. It tonifies the lower origin, assists the Yang pathway, and benefits the decline of Mingmen fire, especially suitable for the elderly. It eliminates macules and kills parasites, treating sores.
Tong Nuan Du Feng Qi Gao (Warm-Belly Navel-Sealing Plaster): Zhou Shi Jia Bao records: Applying it in summer prevents dysentery in autumn. Ingredients: Leek seeds, Cnidium fruit, large Aconite root each 1 liang; Cinnamon twig 1 liang; Sichuan pepper 3 liang; Wa Sulfur 1 liang; Musk 3 fen; Single garlic clove 1 piece; Sesame oil 3 jin. Soak coarse herbs for half a month, boil until withered, strain, boil again until dripping water forms beads. Add Lead tetroxide (Huang Dan) 12 liang, continue boiling. Cool, then add fine herbs. Pregnant women should avoid application.
Deng Xian Gao (Immortal-Ascending Plaster): Wan Shi Jia Chao records: This medicine preserves essence without leakage, consolidates the root, strengthens Yang, builds physique and strength. For those who do not ejaculate during intercourse, it allows harvesting essence from ten women. Also treats lower back pain. Suitable for lower origin deficiency, five labors and seven injuries, hemiplegia, bladder hernia, cold qi in the lower jiao, descending intestines, chronic leg pain and numbness lasting decades, impotence, leukorrhea, bloody strangury, yin pain, and metrorrhagia. Ingredients: Sesame oil 1 jin 4 liang, Licorice root 2 liang. Boil to 60% reduction. Add ingredients in stages: First, Sesame seed 4 liang. Second, Licorice root 2 qian. Third, Asparagus tuber (soaked in wine, heart removed), Ophiopogon tuber, Polygala root (both soaked in wine, hearts removed), Rehmannia root (washed in wine), Prepared Rehmannia root (steamed in wine), Achyranthes root (stalks removed, soaked in wine), Cnidium fruit (washed in wine), Tiger bone (fried in fat), Dodder seed (soaked in wine), Deer antler (fried in fat), Cistanche (washed in wine, scales removed), Drynaria rhizome, Pedicularis flower, Momordica charantia seed (shell removed), Apricot kernel (skin and tip removed), Valerian flower, Cinnamon bark (skin removed) — each 3 qian. Boil over mild to strong fire until black and withered, strain. Add Calcined Lead tetroxide 0.5 jin. Fourth, Pine rosin 8 liang, stir constantly with locust and willow branches until water drop test passes. Fifth, Wa Sulfur, Realgar, Dragon bone, Halloysitum rubrum — each powdered to 2 qian, boil for half an hour. Sixth, Frankincense, Myrrh, Costus root, Clove bud — each powdered to 5 qian, boil, remove from fire, cool. Seventh, Toad venom, Musk, Stilbite — each 2 qian, pass water drop test. Eighth, Yellow rosin 1 liang, store in porcelain jar, seal with wax. Immerse in well for three days to remove fire toxicity. Apply to navel with red silk. If ejaculation is imminent during intercourse, wipe off plaster with female saliva to allow release, facilitating conception. (Ying Chang notes: The theory of mastering women leads to licentiousness; the theory of seed generation also promotes lust. Errors outweigh successes; readers should be cautious.)
Bao Zhu Gao (Precious Pearl Plaster): *Xing Qie Jian Mi* records: This medicine supports sinews and bones, nourishes blood, builds muscle, and consolidates the origin. Before applying this plaster, rub Yao Yan (lower back) with Ca Jiu Yi Dan for three days. Ingredients: Halloysitum rubrum, Asparagus tuber, Ophiopogon tuber, Rehmannia root (raw and prepared), Pedicularis flower, Cnidium fruit, Deer antler, Valerian flower, Saposhnikovia root, Scrophularia root, Magnolia bark, Tiger bone, Dodder seed, Costus root — each 1 liang. Clove bud, Cinnamon twig, Drynaria rhizome, Red Peony root, Scutellaria root, Cistanche, White Dragon bone, Eucommia bark — each 1.5 qian. Raw Aconite root 1 piece, Castor seed 100 grains (oil removed), Pangolin scale 1.5 qian, Earthworm (earth removed) 2 qian, Momordica charantia seed (shell removed, oil retained, sliced), Wa Sulfur, Myrrh — each 1 qian, Dragon's blood 1 qian, Frankincense 2 qian, Pine rosin and Yellow rosin each 4 qian, Musk a little. Use Sesame oil 2 jin. Soak herbs in oil for three days, boil in pot until black, strain, stir with locust/willow branches. Add rosin and wax, then fine herb oil. Stop when water drop forms a bead. Store in porcelain. Apply to lower back with silk/cotton cloth. Efficacy is miraculous.
Ca Jiu Yi Dan (Long-Rubbing Easy-Changing Pill): Cistanche, Galangal, Cnidium fruit, Clove, Iris flower, Camphor each 1 liang. Momordica seed and Toad venom a little, powdered. Form pills with refined honey, size of a bullet. Use one pill per application. Rub lower back thousands of times, cover with soft silk/velvet, keep on for one day. After three days, apply Bao Zhu Gao.
Qi Bao Dan (Seven-Treasure Pill): Gao Lian's Prescription: Treats chronic diarrhea and dysentery unresponsive to other treatments; effective immediately. Suitable for elderly and spleen-deficiency diarrhea. Ingredients: Aconite root processed with child's urine and yellow clay 5 qian, Angelica root 1 liang, Dried ginger 5 qian, Evodia fruit, Magnolia bark, Ginger-processed Sichuan pepper each 3 qian, Ship-borne sulfur 8 qian. Powder the seven ingredients. Mix with rice vinegar into two balls. Wrap in dough like sugar-filled pastries. Cook over mild-strong fire until dough is done. Remove dough, powder pills. Take 20 pills with rice porridge water, fasting at noon. For food stagnation and qi pain, take with ginger-salt water.
Shen Xiao Gan Dan (Miraculous Dry Pill): *Yan She Er Ji* records: Solidifies Yang, benefits Kidney, strengthens sinews and muscles, harmonizes blood vessels, aids conception. Ingredients: Aconitum lateral root (Tianxiong) 3 qian (skin and tip removed), Realgar 3 qian, Opium 3 qian, Toad venom 3 qian, Large Clove buds 4 pieces, Ginseng 3 qian, Refined Camphor frost 3 qian, Frankincense and Myrrh (oil removed) each 5 fen, Wa Sulfur 3 qian. Grind finely, wrap in silk gauze. Outside, Musk 2 qian (finely powdered, separately packed). Bletilla striata bulb (amount sufficient for application) soaked in boiling water in a bowl. Place bulb in silk bag, squeeze juice, discard residue. Mix juice with 3 qian Benzoin resin and medicine powder. Sprinkle Musk powder on top. Form into sticks, dry in shade in porcelain box, or seal and sun-dry slightly. Grind and rub when dry.
Jian Gen Wan (Root-Cutting Pill): *Jingyan Guang Ji* records: Treats stomach qi pain, cures root with one dose, especially effective for cold pain. Ingredients: Corydalis rhizome, Black pepper, Trogopterus dung, White cardamom each 5 qian. Wa Sulfur (if unavailable, use mineral sulfur: soak in water, change morning and evening, take out, boil in porcelain vessel several times, cool on earth, wash with water again) 1 liang, Costus root slices dried 2.5 qian. Grind to fine powder, mix and store. Strong constitution: take 1 fen. Weak: 8 li. Elderly/children: 5 li. Mix with warm liquor (half small cup), enter sealed room, abstain from all food. Next day eat thin rice soup. After five days, resume solid food. Never recurs. Pregnant women forbidden.
