Note on Jinbuhuan:
Also known as "Si Li Tao Sheng" (Escaping Death).
Treats pediatric colds, cough due to wind-cold, hemoptysis in adults caused by overexertion or trauma, various pains due to wind pathogens, and unnamed carbuncles and sores.
It is also called "Jiu Ming Wang" (King of Saving Lives). It resembles the root of *Rumex* (Sheep-sorrel), but its leaves are round and short, and the plant itself is not very tall. This herb originates from the extreme West and was introduced to Central China. People cultivate it for medicinal purposes. It sprouts after the Beginning of Spring (Lichun) and withers after the Summer Solstice (Xiazhi); the root is used medicinally. *Bencao Gangmu* mentions that Sanqi (Notoginseng Root) is also named Jinbuhuan, which is distinct from this herb. Additionally, there is a woody plant also named Jinbuhuan.
Wang Lianshi's *Herbal Formulas* records: The variety of Jinbuhuan with large leaves is called Jinboyu Dajiegu Cao (Golden Bowl Large Bone-Setting Grass); the variety with fine leaves is called Xiao Jiegu Cao (Small Bone-Setting Grass). It is quite effective for hemoptysis, hence called Tuxue Cao (Hemoptysis Grass); for arrow wounds in military campaigns, applying it externally is effective, hence also called Jetou Cao (Arrowhead Grass).
The nature is neutral; it breaks blood stasis and generates new blood; treats contusions and fractures, dissipates carbuncles and swelling, stops bleeding, cures scabies and tinea, and can be mixed with sugar and vinegar, pounded, and applied topically.
For insect bites, pound the leaves and apply topically. Treats lung abscess (Fei Yong).
The leaves can enhance arm strength and enable the drawing of stiff bows. For those with arm pain or weakness unable to draw a bow, take the leaves, soften them by rubbing, cover the upper arm, and bind tightly with cloth. Overnight, the pain will subside, and full strength will be gathered into the arms, making bow-drawing effortless. It is considered an essential medicine for military camps.
For early-stage carbuncles and sores: *Baicao Jing* records: Jinbuhuan grass, roots and leaves in any proportion, pound 5 qian, decoct with aged wine and ingest.
For lung abscess (Fei Yong): *Baicao Jing* records: Take 1 liang of Jinbuhuan root, or seven leaves, pound to extract juice, decoct with wine and ingest; three doses result in cure. Applicable regardless of whether there is halitosis or expectoration of foul matter.
For wind-pain: Yang's Verified Formula records: Jinbuhuan 1.5 qian, Xiaohuoxue (Minor Blood-Activating Herb), Zhike (Aurantium Fruit), Ziye (Perilla Leaf), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) each 3 qian; Wuyao (Lindera Root), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome) each 2 qian, Huafen (Trichosanthes Root) 5 qian, old wine 1 jin. Decoct until hot and ingest.
For contusion pain and wind-pathogen conditions: *Cihang Huoren Shu* records: Jiumingwang is identical to Jinbuhuan; leaves resemble winter vegetable leaves. Use leaves in spring and summer, roots in winter. Pound to extract juice, mix with wine and ingest. Apply the dregs mixed with hairy-footed crab pounded into a paste externally. If the condition is due to wind-pathogens, use only the dregs for external application.
Wang Lianshi's Formula records: Promote blood circulation and break stasis, combine with Dishumu (Broussonetia Papyrifera Stem Bark) and Luodeda (Vincetoxicum Hirundinaria Root), decoct with wine and ingest.
