Iron Fan (Tie Shan Zi) Mulberry Galls, Mulberry Leaf Nourishment, Mulberry Oil
*Baicao Jing* records: When mulberry trees grow old, galls form on the trunk. These are robust and tumor-like in appearance. They should be chopped off with a knife, dried in the shade, and then used as medicine.
It dispels wind-dampness and bi-syndrome, and can be soaked in wine for consumption to treat stomach pain. (*Baicao Jing*)
*Baicao Jing* records: Do not use mulberry leaves that have been harvested twice; only harvest the first flush of leaves, as the second flush lacks full efficacy. Even after the Great Snow solar term, leaves may remain green on the branches or turn yellow and withered but still hang on the branches; both are usable. The leaves must be exposed to heavy snow, and harvested the next day when the weather clears. They should be strung together and hung under eaves to dry in the shade. Their color becomes mostly dark green-black, and they produce an iron-like sound when blown by the wind, hence the name "Iron Fan." Leaves harvested after the Winter Solstice are superior.
They treat intestinal wind (hematochezia), eye diseases, cough, and night sweats. (*Baicao Jing*) To wash various epidemic eye conditions, swelling and pain due to wind-heat, dry and blurry eyes with redness, take two sheets of Iron Fan, place them in a clean, oil-free tea bowl with a lid. Pour half a bowl of boiling water over them, cover well, and wait until the liquid is warm. When the color turns yellow-green like strong tea, indicating the essence has been extracted, use it to wash the eyes and wipe dry. After one or two *shichen* (2–4 hours), reheat the bowl containing the medicinal liquid in hot water and wash again. Wash three to five times daily until cured. One bowl of this water can be used for thirty to forty people. (*Yangsu Yuan Yan Fang*)
For middle-aged blurred vision, *Fuming San* from *Ophthalmology Essentials*: Use mulberry leaves that have endured frost and snow, specifically those that remained on the tree in the twelfth lunar month. Combine them with Chrysanthemum Morifolium Flower (*Gan Ju*), Biota Orientalis Leaf (*Ce Bai Ye*), Schizonepeta Spike (*Jing Jie Sui*), and Mulberry Root Bark (*Sang Bai Pi*). If there is ocular discharge or tearing, add Mugwort Leaf (*Ai Ye*) and Atractylodes Rhizome (*Cang Zhu*). If itching occurs, add Red Peony Root (*Chi Shao*) and Sichuan Pepper (*Chuan Jiao*). Grind into coarse powder, mix equally, decoct in water, and use for fumigation and washing. Note: Do not wash if there is severe redness and swelling.
Excellent Prescription for Wind-Induced Tearing Without Medication: Decoct mulberry leaves that did not fall in the twelfth lunar month. Wash daily with the warm liquid, or add a small amount of Mirabilite (*Mang Xiao*).
This refers to the gall formed on multi-year-old mulberry trees that have been repeatedly pruned of tender shoots; the growth at the branch tip resembles a fist.
To treat diaphragmatic syndrome (conditions affecting the chest/diaphragm), *Liang Hou Ying Ji Yan Fang*: Burn the old mulberry gall until red-hot but retain its nature (charred but not ashed), grind into powder, and swallow with good wine for immediate cure.
