Commonly known as *Yanyou* (Tobacco Tar). *Gujin Miyuan* records: If *Yanyou* stains clothing, it can be removed by washing with water from melon seeds. *Tongshu* states: If *Yanyou* enters the eyes, particularly for children or those who habitually smoke, and one attempts to wash it out with other hot water, the pain will intensify with washing, inevitably leading to blindness. One must use loose hair or tassels to gently rub the area, after which recovery occurs promptly.
It can resolve snake venom, be applied to malignant sores and stubborn tinea (fungal skin infections), and kill gu poison (parasitic disease).
Snake bite: A verified prescription by Liu Yuyi: Take the grease from inside a smoking pipe, apply it to the bite wound, and rub it into the flesh with fingers; the pain stops immediately, yielding excellent results.
Centipede bite: A prescription by the Liu family: Apply the oil from the tobacco pipe to the bite site, or rub it with tobacco ash; pain ceases instantly.
Note: *Yanyou* is also called *Yangao* (Tobacco Paste). It has a pungent taste and slight toxicity. Chen Yizhai, a Gongshi (scholar), stated that *Yanyou* is generated by the convergence of the Qi of the Five Elements. Recently, external alchemists have used it to refine medicinal gold, enhancing its luster. Practitioners conceal its name, calling it *Taiji Gao* (Supreme Ultimate Ointment), or *Qini* (Qi Mud), or *Wuxing Dan* (Five Elements Pill). When extracted to fuel lamps instead of oil, all poisonous insects avoid it, and dragons in the water fear it. For medicinal use, that obtained from split old bamboo pipes is superior. The oil from plum branches, rattan, rosewood, ebony, old stork grass, pure copper, or pure silver pipes is inferior to that from bamboo in terms of therapeutic nature. Only the *Yanyou* from ivory pipes can kill gu poison. In Fujian, there are olive wood pipes, the oil of which can poison fish. The quality of *Yangao* varies according to the type of tobacco consumed. Tobacco sold in shops is made by spraying tobacco leaves with oil, pressing them into blocks, and shaving them into strips with an iron plane; this pure leaf product without admixtures is considered the highest grade. Some manufacturers mix jasmine leaves and alum-red during block formation, shave them into strips, and add turmeric powder to adjust the color. This variety produces a dry, harsh smoke that harms the body; the resulting paste is pale and thin, lacking the potency of the premium grade. Zhu Xing'an, a Jinshi (imperial graduate) from Haiyan, stated: "I initially did not believe that *Yanyou* could resolve snake venom, until I witnessed a villager capture a red-banded krait, eight or nine chi long and as thick as an arm, exhaling toxic vapor. A dog approached, and upon the snake's exhalation, the dog's abdomen ruptured and it died. Another person, in jest, removed the mouthpiece of an old bamboo pipe, drew out the oil using a bamboo filament, and pierced the snake's mouth with it. The snake bit down, closed its eyes and mouth, curled up, then stretched out again several times, eventually becoming stiff as a rope and dying. Only then did I realize its efficacy in resolving toxins and killing parasites was genuine." Liu Zhongxu, Shaofu (deputy magistrate) from Zhucheng, said: "In the northwest beyond the passes, there exists a poisonous insect named *Mengmang*. It resembles horseflies common in central China. When people encounter it outdoors, it touches their faces. Regardless of where touched, the pain is not severe initially, but soon fine maggots appear around the eye sockets, gathering to consume the ocular fluid, causing unbearable pain. The local treatment involves taking four or five pipe stems, breaking them to extract the oil, applying it inside the eye, enduring the pain for a moment until the maggots die, and then washing off the oil with warm water for recovery." *Chunyuan Wenjian Lu* records: Tala Bahatai, the former land of Dzungaria, suffers from white flies in summer that harm humans and livestock. They touch the corners of the eyes and leave maggots behind, which cannot be removed without adhesive. According to Chang Zhongcheng's notes: At the northwest relay stations and places like Yili, wild flies swarm human faces. If they touch the skin, maggots emerge from the eye corners, causing extreme pain and itching, sometimes leading to blindness. Locals often treat this by applying *Yanyou* to the eye corners. However, after recovery, the eyes remain swollen and red for several days. This is inferior to the Mongolian method: using a piece of fish glue to adhere to and extract the maggots from the eye corner, which does not damage the eye and is preferable to *Yanyou*.
