Note on Huyabanzhi (Sedum sarmentosum):
It grows in shady and damp places. Shoots emerge before the Start of Summer (Lixia). The leaves are pointed and slender, arranged in a "pin" (品) character pattern, growing in overlapping layers. At the Summer Solstice (Xiazhi), it blooms with yellow flowers resembling Wason (Orostachys fimbriatus); the plant dies after flowering. If there is abundant rainfall that year, the herb will be lush. Those with larger leaves are called Huyabanzhi (Tiger Tooth Half-branch).
It treats carbuncles, sores, hard boils, perianal abscesses (Biandu), jaundice, and throat lichen (Houxuan). *Jiusheng Kuhai* records: Crush Dogyabanzhi (Sedum sarmentosum) to extract juice, mix with ink juice ground from aged Jingmo (Beijing Inkstick), blend evenly, gargle the throat, and swallow 4-5 times daily. Severe cases heal within half a month.
For Tianshetou (acute suppurative infection of the fingertip), where pain is unbearable: *Yizong Huibian* records: Crush Banzhhi together with fragrant rice lees, add a little salt, wrap around the affected area, and pain stops immediately.
Efficacy is similar.
Wang Lianshi's *Caishao Shu* records: Huyabanzhi is cold in nature, non-toxic. Those with large leaves are called Yangjiao Banzhhi; those with flat, large leaves are called Mayabanzhi. All grow in cool valleys and treat sores, fire toxins, hemorrhoids, and fistulas with miraculous effects.
Also known as Jiangban Banzhhi, Tiegang Banzhhi, or Shanbanzhi. It grows on rock walls, with large, clustered leaves round like broad beans in soybean paste, hence the name. *Baicao Jing* states: Jiangban Banzhhi, also known as Hanbanzhi, has leaves like broad beans in soybean paste, growing on rocks, dry soil, or flat lowlands, creeping. Shoots emerge in February, stems slightly square, water-red with fine red dots, not withering after frost, blooming yellow in April like Wason. People in Shandong eat it as a vegetable. Jiang Xiangyun says: There are two varieties, distinguished by red or green stems, which are the best remedy for women's leukorrhea (red and white discharge). Use red-stemmed ones for red discharge, white-stemmed ones for white discharge. After harvesting, crush to get half a wine cup of juice. Suanmimi Cao (likely *Sedum* species) also has red and white varieties; use red for red discharge, white for white. Mix half a wine cup of juice evenly, add half a wine cup of Shaoxing wine, boil, take once to stop symptoms permanently.
Nature is cold; eliminates carbuncles and swelling, treats damp-heat, promotes urination and harmonizes blood, treats intestinal abscesses, hemorrhoids, and fistulas.
Treats snake bites and sores: Particularly effective for perianal abscesses, wind-bi, traumatic injuries, jaundice, and sweat spots. *Baicao Jing* records: For traumatic injuries, use a handful of Jiangban Banzhhi, crush to extract juice...
To cure malaria: *Jiabao Fang* records: Harvest Jiangbandoucao on the sixth day of the sixth lunar month at cockcrow, rinse slightly, steam for one day, sun-dry, or bake if not dry. Dosage: Day 1 - 1 qian, Day 2 - 2 qian, Day 3 - 3 qian, taken with wine. It is ideal to drink until drunk after taking the medicine. Avoid letting chickens, dogs, or women see it during harvest; it is miraculous.
Dog bite: Wash blood from the wound with wine, crush Jiangban Banzhhi and apply to the wound; it scabs and heals in one or two days (tested by Wang Xiaojing).
Scrofula: Jin Yangchun says: Eating Mayabanzhi as a vegetable regularly can eliminate long-standing scrofula; tested repeatedly with success.
Treats acute Sha disease: Dry Jiangban Cao in shade, take 3 qian each time, decoct in water and drink.
Treats strangury: *Qifang Leibian* records: Take a handful of Sesame, one Walnut, and Shi-shang Mayabanzhi, crush together, and take with raw liquor.
Treats Ascites (Shuihu): Wang Lianshi says: Crush Jiangban Cao, mix with Musk, apply to the umbilicus. Within the time it takes a person to walk five li, the fluid will drain down.
