Shen Yun recorded in *Food Hui Zuan*: Lion blood kills various insects; burning it dispels evil qi (pathogenic factors associated with malevolent spirits).
Wang Yitang possessed a piece of lion dung, stored in an iron box and preserved by surrounding it with iron filings. Its texture is as hard as iron or stone, and when ground, it appears red. It is said that without preservation by iron filings, it would easily rot. It treats all kinds of malignant sores on the lower legs and feet; for chronic ulcers that have not healed for years, applying it causes scabs to form and fall off.
Elephant White, Elephant Tail Hair
Note: There are two types of elephants: domesticated and wild. Those in the capital are fed official rations; those produced in the mountains of Yunnan and Guangdong feed on bamboo, wood, and weeds. For medicinal use, wild elephant dung is superior. Dung from capital elephants is often used by leather tanneries to splash-dye yellow mink and yellow wolf pelts, making the fur black and glossy like lacquer. In *Bencao Gangmu* under the entry for Elephant, items such as ivory, meat, eyes, skin, gallbladder, and bones are listed as medicines, but dung is omitted; this serves as a supplement.
To treat Goose Palm Wind (a dermatological condition affecting the hands), smoke the patient with burnt elephant dung, and it will heal spontaneously.
Qi Si Hui Sheng San (Revival Powder) recorded in Li Wenbing's *Jingyan Guangji*: Treats smallpox lesions that, on the seventh or eighth day, suddenly turn black and sink inward into the abdomen, with the body scratched open, accompanied by throat congestion and panting, leading to imminent death; taking this formula causes the lesions to re-emerge, instantly restoring life. The prescription includes Danggui (Angelica sinensis), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), Baishao (White Peony Root), Shengdi (Rehmannia glutinosa prepared with wine), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Honghua (Carthamus tinctorius). If lesions sink upward, add Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix); if sinking downward, add Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix); if sinking all over the body, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), along with lightly stir-fried elephant dung. For a one-year-old infant, use 2 qian; for older children, up to 3-5 qian. Grind the above herbs into coarse powder for one dose, decoct with half water and half wine, and take orally to cause the lesions to re-emerge. For black ding (hard boils) on the feet appearing on the seventh or eighth day, puncture with a needle to remove pus, apply Taiyi Gao (Taiyi Plaster) to draw out the toxin, and continue taking 2-3 doses.
Warm Rash (Epidemic Exanthem) from *Liangpeng Huibei Fang*: Treats children or adults suffering from warm rash where lesions retract into the chest and heart area, causing panting and fever. Use 8 qian of elephant dung and 2 qian of Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), decoct in 2 zhong of water until 1 zhong remains, then take orally to immediately expel the rash outward.
It is said that when elephants mate in water, their essence floats on the surface. Keepers of elephant houses collect it in porcelain bottles for storage. When applied topically to the face, it prevents wrinkles; it can also be used in aphrodisiac formulas.
*Tongya* records: Modern toothpicks highly value elephant tail hair, believing it has fire-clearing properties.
