Also known as *Zhoupi Cong* (Wrinkled-skin Scallion), it is used by alchemists in their furnaces. *Baicao Jing* (Mirror of Hundred Herbs) records: *Lizhi Cao* (Toadflax Herb, *Plantago asiatica*) sprouts at the end of winter, does not wither after frost and snow, sends up stems in March, reaching nearly one chi (approx. 33 cm) in height, blooming with small purple flowers arranged in spikes, and withers in May. The stem is square and hollow; leaves are pointed and long, with a rough texture on the surface and serrated edges; harvested in March. In the Xinhai year, while residing in the Lin'an government office, I saw this plant abundant in an abandoned garden. Its leaves were deep green, shining in the sunlight, with serrated edges; the leaf backs were pale white, with interrupted vein patterns, distinct rough granules, and clear concave-convex textures. It remained green through winter, had single petals, grew in clumps of dozens of leaves, and dotted among the grass by the steps, appearing quite elegant.
Its nature is cool, and it cools blood. A prescription left by Ancestor Ge: Treats eighteen types of throat disorders, reduces carbuncles and swellings, and treats yaws and hemorrhoids.
Acute convulsive disease (Ji Jing Feng): *Ji Yan Fang* (Collected Effective Prescriptions) records: Take half a zhong of juice from *Lizhi Cao*, mix with half a fen of cinnabar processed by water levigation, stir evenly, and administer orally for immediate recovery.
Pediatric gan accumulation (malnutrition syndrome): *Ji Yan Fang* records: Pour the juice of *Lizhi Cao* into a teacup. Take one soft liver of a chicken that has never touched water, pierce it several times with a silver needle, and soak it in the juice. The juice will float on the liver. Steam and cook it over a rice pot, then eat it to cure the condition.
Sore throat or tonsillitis (Ru E): *Jisheng Kuhai* (Sea of Saving Lives) records: Mash fresh *Lizhi Cao*, add rice vinegar, wrap in silk cloth, bind to the head of a chopstick, and apply/dab into the throat several times until cured.
Unilateral or bilateral tonsillitis: *Ji Xiao Fang* (Collected Efficacy Prescription) records: Take a handful of *Xueliqing* (Snow-in-the-Green, i.e., *Lizhi Cao*), mash and extract juice, mix with half a teacup of boiling water, and drink. If phlegm is present, expectorate it; if no phlegm, induce vomiting using a chicken feather. If thirsty, use salt water or vinegar water to quench thirst. Strictly avoid green vegetables and vegetable oil.
Hemorrhoids: *Huoren Shu* (Book of Life-Saving) records: Stir-fry sophora seeds (*Huaimi*) with *Xueliqing* juice, grind into powder, mix with mashed persimmon paste to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take three qian per dose, washed down with decoction of *Xueliqing*.
White turbidity (Bai Zhuo): Prescribed by Zhang Lvyi: Decoct fresh *Xueliqing* herb with raw baijiu (white liquor) and take orally.
Unnamed swelling and toxicity: Effective prescription by Ye Tianshi: Take a handful of *Xueliqing* (the root is preferred). Mash together with *Jin Jiandao* (Golden Scissors Herb, *Ajania chrysanthemifolia*). Add half a zhong of wine lees, mash all together, and apply externally. There is no need to keep the wound covered/open; mild cases will dissipate spontaneously, and even in severe cases where pus forms, it is not harmful.
Treatment of scrofula (Shu Lou): *Jingyan Guangji* (Extensive Collection of Empirical Knowledge) records: Use *Guodongqing* (Winter-Passing Green), which is *Lizhi Cao*, also known as *Tianmingjing*. Take five or six pieces, cook together with crucian carp in a pot. Remove the herbs and fish, and drink the broth several times to cure.
Prescription by Wang Lianshi: *Fengyancao* (Phoenix Eye Herb) is *Lizhi Cao*, locally called *Laishi Cao*, and medically named *Gedongqing*. It cools blood, stops metrorrhagia (profuse uterine bleeding), and disperses various carbuncles.
