*Juhua Shen* (Chrysanthemum Ginseng) is produced in the Qiaojia Xun riverside of Dongchuan Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Its leaves resemble those of chrysanthemum (*Chrysanthemi Flos*).
Its efficacy is similar to *Renshen* (Ginseng Root), but its potency is slightly inferior.
*Bai Cao Jing* (Mirror of Hundred Herbs) records: Brought by merchant ships from Zhangzhou and Quanzhou from "Hongmao" (referring to Western countries like the Netherlands or Britain), it bears no resemblance to *Renshen*. The stem is long and thick; the longer ones are three to four chi in length, with a purple-black color. The thicker ones are as large as a thumb. When broken, there are white dotted marks inside, along with patterned textures, resembling *Jianshen* (Fujian Ginseng).
It is miraculous in treating diarrhea and dysentery.
Produced in Xi'an and other places in Shaanxi Province, it resembles *Renshen* in shape, with both skin and core being greenish-black, hence the name. Governor Shi Liunan stated: This ginseng comes from Mount Hua in Shaanxi; consuming it often induces vomiting.
Appendix on *Faluo Mei*
*Yaoxing Kao* (Study of Drug Properties) records: *Fushen* (Fujian Ginseng) is produced in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces. It closely resembles *Renshen*, but its nature and flavor are pungent and hot, making it suitable for deficiency-cold conditions. A rhyme states: "There is also *Fushen*, with pungent, bitter, and sweet flavors; its warm nature tonifies Qi, suitable for those with deficiency-cold constitutions." Note: Excessive consumption of *Fushen* causes sore throat, indicating its hot nature. In the year Yiwei, I resided at the Shanchuan guesthouse, which belonged to the former Yin County. Hearing that *Jianshen* was sold there, I went to find it. It looked exactly like the larger, oil-ripe variety of Taishen, except it was not purely translucent. It had rhizomes (lu tou) but lacked bamboo-joint striations, and its taste was bitter and sweet. When sliced with a bamboo knife, the center was hollow, unlike the solid texture of Liaoshen (Liaoning Ginseng). Liu Zanzhi returned from Fujian, stating that this herb was recently very popular in Fujian and also served as a mild tonic. My brother suffered from wind-fire toothache; rinsing his mouth with the decoction led to immediate relief. This suggests its nature also possesses cold-dispersing properties. Those who claim it is hot may be inaccurate. Jin Yucheng said: *Jianshen* is hot in nature and particularly unsuitable for postpartum women. Although it is truly similar to Liaoshen in appearance, color, and odor, Liaoshen produces saliva upon tasting, whereas this one has astringent aftertaste, thus their efficacies differ significantly. Guangshan Shen and Songshan Shen produced in Henan look identical to those from Liaoning, but when chewed, they leave residue, are not glutinous, and have a bland taste.
*Jinsha Jiang Zhi* (Chronicle of the Golden Sand River) records: Produced in the Fa Jia area of Dongchuan Prefecture, Yunnan. In the year Jiyu, my friend Wang Dingtiao suffered from heart and abdominal pain. A guest brought this substance from Yunnan, calling it *Faluo Mei*. Using the root, its shape resembled Shangdang Shen (Shangdong Ginseng), with a yellowish-white color and a sweet-bitter taste. After taking it, the illness healed. Locals all call it *Faluo Mei*, but it is unclear why other texts write the character "Mei". Cai Yunbai stated: In Fujian, *Jianshen* is called *Faluo Mei*.
It is miraculous in treating heart pain.
