It is Aglaonema commutatum (Guangdong Wannianqing).
Currently, people call it Guangdong Wansui Lily (Aglaonema commutatum). The leaves are like those of Jianlan (Cymbidium ensifolium var. longibracteatum) but darker and richer in color; they do not wither in winter. When first sprouting, the back is purple; as it grows, the color turns green. In summer, it opens purple flowers in spikes, resembling Ophiopogon japonicus (Maidong). Its roots have seeds; it propagates easily by dividing seedlings and thrives abundantly. Because it originates from the Yue region, it is named accordingly. It was listed under "Jixiangcao" in *Bencao Gangmu* with its name recorded but usage unknown. The Jixiangcao cited by Li Shizhen is this plant. It is also called Jixiangcao. In local custom, when women are about to give birth, this plant in its pot is moved into the delivery room, said to relieve difficult labor and postpartum blood syncope. The plant has a vibrant green luster, and its leaves are stiff and straight like arrows. When placed in the delivery room, the leaves become soft and drooping. Their color becomes withered and dull, requiring several months to regain their brightness, which is indeed a curiosity. The seeds under the root can be used as medicine. (Zhou Shirén of Haining stated: The seeds under the root of this plant are extremely cold to the uterus. For women wishing to terminate fertility, taking one hundred seeds crushed into juice will ensure permanent sterility.)
Its nature is cool, and its taste is sweet. It regulates blood, clears the lungs, resolves fire toxins, and is an essential herb for treating seventy-two types of throat disorders.
Treating acute infantile convulsions (Ji Jing Feng): *Huoren Shu* records: Use the root of Yang Jixiangcao (Aglaonema commutatum), crush it to extract juice, add a small amount of Borpian (Bingpian, borneol), and administer three tea spoons via spoon. The patient will awaken immediately.
Also known as Qiannian . It has broad leaves growing in clusters. Each stem bears a single petal without branching. The stems and leaves are quite dark green. In summer, it produces flower buds resembling corn ears, opening small flowers clustered on the buds. In winter, it bears red fruits. It thrives in mountain soil, and many households plant it. In Zhejiang weddings, it is often used to decorate gift boxes, symbolizing eternal youth due to its evergreen nature. *Baicao Jing* records: On the Buddha Bathing Day (the eighth day of the fourth lunar month), in Hangzhou custom, households planting Wansui Lily often cut off its leaves and discard them on the streets, believing that being trampled promotes growth and results in dense new foliage. For medicinal use, leaves are harvested and dried in the shade. Decoction for washing hemorrhoids caused by sitting on cold stools is highly effective, superior to harvesting on other days. *Tusux Bencao* records: Hongyelu (Amaranthus tricolor) and Wansui Lily can both treat mercury poisoning.
Sweet, bitter, and cold. It treats acute throat closure. Crushed juice mixed with a little rice vinegar administered orally induces vomiting of phlegm, leading to recovery. (*Yaojing* states: Its roots often have a grassy smoky odor; ingesting it causes vomiting.) The seeds can induce labor. (Congxin records: Swallow one pill with frankincense decoction; for males, hold in the left hand, for females in the right, and it will be expelled.) *Yaoxingkao* states: Bitter with a slight sweet taste, it detoxifies, clears the stomach, descends fire, and stops hematemesis. Boil seven halved red dates and drink the infusion using shaded-dried tender leaves. The root treats throat bi (sore throat with obstruction); the true variety is identified by short, round-tipped heart-shaped leaves.
White Huodan (a skin disease): Zhu's Effective Prescriptions: Crush Wansui Lily and take the juice orally.
Hemorrhoids and fistulas: Jiabao Fang: Extract juice from Wansui Lily leaves. If no juice is available, use a small amount of water with the root, crush together to extract juice, and apply externally.
Prolapsed rectum in elderly and children: Cihang Huoren Shu: Decoct Wansui Lily with roots and wash with the soup. Apply powder of Chinese Gall (Wubeizi) on top. Effect is immediate.
All kinds of traumatic injuries: *Huoren Shu*: Make pills the size of soybeans using juice from Shan Zhima (Sesamum indicum? Note: Text says Shan Zhima, usually Sesame, but context implies herbal mix), Oak Chestnut Tree Flower, Wansui Lily Flower, and Tieji Weilingxian (Dichroa febrifuga) juice. Take one... [Text fragment].
Head wind (Headache): Songya Zaji: Pili Dan is miraculous for treating head wind. Sharpen the root of Wansui Lily, dip it in Cinnabar (Zhusha), and insert into the nostril. Insert into the right if pain is on the left, and into the left if pain is on the right. For bilateral pain, insert into both. This is miraculous. Clear nasal discharge of watery mucus is required; the effect is wonderful after one week.
Snake venom: Deshengtang Chuanfang: Grind Wansui Lily into a paste, apply the residue as a compress. Both methods are excellent.
Scrotal enlargement: Crush the root of Wansui Lily to extract juice, mix with warm aged wine, and take three doses. Recovery follows.
Swollen and painful hemorrhoids making walking difficult: *Huoren Shu*: Remove both ends of a pig leg bone, place it in a clay pot with Wansui Lily, boil for the time it takes to burn one incense stick. While hot, fumigate and wash the area. Do this three times a day. Recovery occurs in a few days, and recurrence is prevented.
Coiling throat wind (Acute laryngitis/epiglottitis): Jingyan Danfang: Chop and crush the tip of the Wansui Lily root, squeeze out the juice, and administer orally. Vomiting of phlegm and saliva leads to improvement. If the mouth is closed, pry it open with a toothbrush to administer. If vomiting does not occur, stimulate the throat with hair tips to induce vomiting.
Wang Lianshi stated: Wansui Lily: Commonly called the Evergreen-in-Winter Grass. It treats sores and toxins, absorbs damp-heat, washes tinea pedis (Hong Kong foot), soothes burns from fire, treats bullous eruptions (Tianpao Chuang), and herpes zoster (Bai She Chan). Crush and apply the juice.
Wang An's Herb Collection Formula: Treats abdominal distension and ascites, jaundice and heart pain, asthma and cough, and traumatic injuries.
Li's Grass Secrets: Wansui Lily is now widely planted in taverns. It can resolve eye parasites and treat white huodan. Grind into powder, take 1-2 qian with wine, and recover quickly. It also treats dysphagia (Ye Ge).
