(Recorded in the Middle Category of *Mingyi Bielu*)
It is also known as red broomcorn millet. It is called "Zhi" (䅟) in *Erya*.
Su Song stated: People in Zhejiang call it "Red Lotus Rice". Jiangnan produces mostly white broomcorn millet, with occasional red varieties referred to as "Red Shrimp Rice".
Kou Zongshi stated: The husk of Dan Shu (Red Broomcorn Millet) is red, while the grain is yellow. It can only be used for making porridge, not rice, as it is sticky and difficult to separate/digest.
Li Shizhen stated: The ears turn red when ripe, thus it belongs to the Fire element. People in the north use it to brew wine and make cakes.
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, slightly cold, non-toxic. Sun Simiao stated: Slightly warm.
Meng Shen stated: Warm, slightly toxic. Do not consume together with honey or Malva verticillata (Okra/Spring Vegetable).
Kou Zongshi stated: It generates wind and is hot in nature; excessive consumption leads to indigestion. Its other properties are similar to those of broomcorn millet.
[Indications] Cough with rebellious qi, cholera-like disorder, stopping diarrhea and dysentery, clearing heat, relieving irritability and thirst (*Mingyi Bielu*). Directing qi downward, stopping cough, reducing fever (*Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao*). Epidemic smallpox/pea-pox, affecting humans or animals: Wash with thick decoction of millet stalks. Those with only one stem ("Rang") should not be used (*Qianjin Fang*).
Sores and swelling with wind invasion, severe pain due to water-dampness: Smoke burn millet stalks, fumigate until sweating occurs, then cured (*Qianjin Fang*)
