(Sourced from the Song Dynasty *Jiayou Bencao*)
[Collected Explanations] Yuxi stated: It is found on ancient walls and ramparts in shaded areas everywhere. It grows lushly in years with abundant rainfall. Some consider it to be "Yuanyi" (moss growing on walls), which is incorrect. "Yuanyi" grows at the side of wall bases, whereas this plant grows on top of walls, being longer than Yuanyi; hence it is called "Mazong" (Horse Mane), belonging to the moss category.
Li Shizhen stated: "Yuanyi" refers to moss on brick walls, whereas this is Wujiu (a type of fern or moss) on earth walls.
[Aroma and Flavor] Sweet and sour, cold nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Bone-steaming fever, restlessness and irritability, epistaxis caused by heat toxins (*Jiayou Bencao*). Washing hair with it promotes hair growth and darkens hair color, and unblocks urination and defecation (Li Shizhen).
[Attached Prescriptions] Five new prescriptions.
Bleeding from the nine orifices: Apply moss from the top of a wall into the affected orifice (*Haishang Fang*).
Incessant epistaxis: Cunjin San (Inch Gold Powder): Use 2.5 qian of Mazong growing on walls and 5 qian of Huangyaozi from Shizhou. Grind into powder. Take 2 qian with newly drawn water; a second dose will stop bleeding immediately (*Weisheng Baojian*).
Obstruction of both urination and defecation: Wash Mazong clean, stir-fry over a tile until crisp, and chop. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct in one zhan of water, and drink (*Puji Fang*).
Damp sores above the ear: Mix equal parts of Mazong and moss from a well. Grind into powder, mix with oil from a lamp holder, and apply to the lesion (*Shengji Lu*).
Premature white hair in youth: Take 1 liang each of Mazong, Shimazong, Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), and Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome); 2 liang of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger); 10 Hutaos (Walnuts); and 0.5 liang of Danfan (Alum). Grind into powder, pound into a single mass. Place an amount the size of a bullet in a silk bag for each use. Add a small amount to hot wine, soak to extract juice, and use to wash hair. Remarkable effects after one month (*Shengji Lu*).

[Names] Wansui (Ten Thousand Years, *Benjing*), Changsheng Busi Cao (Grass of Longevity and Immortality, *Gangmu*), Baozu (Leopard Foot, *Wu Pu*), Qiugu (Seeking Thigh, *Bielu*), Jiaoshi (Intercourse Time, *Bielu*).
Li Shizhen stated: "Juanbai" and "Baozu" describe its shape resembling curled cypress branches and leopard feet. "Wansui" and "Changsheng" refer to its durability and longevity.
[Collected Explanations] *Bielu* stated: Juanbai grows among rocks in valleys of Changshan. Harvest in May and July, and dry in the shade.
Tao Hongjing stated: It is now produced in nearby regions. It grows in clusters on stones and soil, with fine leaves resembling cypress, curling up like chicken feet, yellowish-green in color. When used, remove the lower part near the sand and stone.
Yuxi stated: It is produced in Jiankang.
*Fanzi Jiran* stated: It is produced in the Sanchu region.
Su Song stated: It is now also found in Guan-Shan and various prefectures such as Yizhou and Yanzhou. The perennial roots are purple with many fibers. Sprouts emerge in spring, resembling cypress leaves but finer, curled like chicken feet, three to five cun high. It has no flowers or seeds and grows mostly on rocks.
[Preparation] Li Shizhen stated: For use, boil in salt water for half a day, then boil in well water for another half day, sun-dry, and bake before use.
[Aroma and Flavor] Pungent, warm nature, non-toxic. *Bielu* stated: Sweet, neutral. Wu Pu stated: Shen Nong considered it pungent and neutral; Tong Jun and Lei Gong considered it sweet and slightly cold.
[Indications] Evil qi in the five zang organs, cold-heat pain in the female vagina, amenorrhea due to masses and blood stasis leading to infertility. Long-term use makes the body light and complexion harmonious (*Benjing*). Stops cough and counterflow qi, treats rectal prolapse, dissipates strangury accumulations, treats wind-stroke dizziness, flaccidity and weakness, strengthens yin and benefits essence, and improves facial appearance (*Bielu*). Regulates menstruation, treats abdominal pain from corpse-guan and ghost-guan diseases, and cries of hundred evils and ghosts (Zhen Quan). Calms the heart, removes facial and head wind disorders, warms the water organ (kidneys/bladder). Raw form breaks blood; roasted form stops bleeding (Da Ming).
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Lower intestinal bleeding: Take equal parts of Juanbai, Cebai (Cypress Twig), and Zonglv (Palma Leaf). Burn until carbonized but retaining efficacy, grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose with wine. Can also be taken as rice pills (*Ren Cun Fang*).
Long-standing lower bleeding: Take equal parts of Juanbai and Diyu (Sanguisorba Root, roasted). Use 1 liang per dose, add one bowl of water, boil for dozens of boils, and take orally in one go (*Baiyi Xuanfang*).
[Appendix] Dibai (Song Dynasty *Tujing*)
Su Song stated: Treats lower bleeding from visceral toxicity. Mix with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) in equal parts, grind into powder, and take 2 qian with rice drink. People in Shu highly value this prescription. This herb grows in the mountains and valleys of Shu, and is also found in Hezhong Prefecture. Roots are yellow, thread-like; stems are thin with yellow spots; no flowers or leaves. Grows in March, about four to five cun long; harvested in April, dried in the sun. In Shu, it is harvested in September and widely sold in markets.
Li Shizhen stated: This is merely Juanbai growing on the ground surface.
Hengsheng Cao (Grass of Containing Life) (*Shenyi*)
Chen Cangqi stated: Grows in Bohai Guo. Leaves are like Juanbai but larger. Nature is neutral, non-toxic. Treats difficult labor in women; hold in mouth and swallow juice, and birth will proceed smoothly.
