(Song Dynasty *Kaibao Bencao*)
[Correction] Transferred from the Wood section to this section.
[Names] Dafu Binglang (Dafu Areca Nut) (*Tujing*), Zhu Binglang (Pig Areca Nut).
Li Shizhen said: "Dafu" is named after its shape, used to distinguish it from Jixin Binglang (Chicken-heart Areca Nut).
[Collected Explanations] Su Song said: Dafu grows in various countries of the South Sea. Its origin resembles Binglang (Areca Nut), with only slight differences in stem, leaves, roots, and trunk.
Tao Hongjing said: Those growing towards the sun are Binglang (Areca Nut); those growing towards the shade are Dafu.
Li Shizhen said: Dafuzi (Fruit of Areca Catechu) originates from Lingnan and southern Yunnan. It is a variety of Binglang (Areca Nut) characterized by a large belly, flat shape, and astringent taste, unlike the sharp, long, and superior-tasting Binglang (Areca Nut). This is what is called Zhu Binglang (Pig Areca Nut). It is likely due to different local productions, and people nowadays do not distinguish them well. Tao's theory dividing them into yin and yang is also subjective speculation. According to Liu Xun's *Lingbiao Luyi*: The produce from Jiaozhou and Guangzhou is not the imported Binglang (Areca Nut), but all Dafuzi (Fruit of Areca Catechu), which locals all call Binglang (Areca Nut). They harvest and eat the fruits from tender to mature. They chew them together with Fuleng Vine (Betel Leaf Vine) and Wawu Hui (Tile Ash) to dispel miasma and pestilence. The peel is collected for medicinal use; the outer surface is black, and the inner part consists of fibrous strands similar to coconut husk. Furthermore, *Yunnan Ji* records: Each branch of Dafu Binglang (Dafu Areca Nut) bears three or two hundred fruits. When green, they are sliced, wrapped with one leaf of Betel Nut Vine (*Piper betle*) and clam powder, and eaten together to reduce the astringency. Based on these two accounts, both Dafuzi (Fruit of Areca Catechu) and Binglang (Areca Nut) can be used interchangeably, although their efficacy is slightly inferior to that of standard Binglang (Areca Nut).
Dafuzi (Fruit of Areca Catechu)
[Flavor and Toxicity] Acrid, astringent, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Has the same function as Binglang (Areca Nut) (Li Shizhen).
Dafupi (Pericarpium Arecae)
[Preparation] Sun Simiao said: Poisonous birds often gather on Areca trees. Whenever using Areca pericarp, it should first be washed with wine, then washed again with soybean juice, dried, roasted in ashes until warm, and sliced for use.
[Flavor and Toxicity] Acrid, slightly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Treats cold and heat qi attacking the heart and abdomen, accumulation of toxins in the large intestine, phlegm obstruction in the diaphragm, and acid regurgitation. Decoct together with ginger and salt, and administer with Qi-regulating herbs for good effect (*Kaibao Bencao*). Descends all types of stagnant qi, stops cholera, unblocks the large and small intestines, strengthens the spleen, opens the appetite, and regulates the middle jiao (Chen Zangqi). Descends rebellious qi, resolves edema caused by water qi in the skin and muscles, treats severe foot disease (Hongjiaojiao) with stagnation and rebellion, malarial fevers with fullness and obstruction, and fetal malposition with nausea and vomiting.
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Leaking sores with foul discharge: Wash the affected area with decoction of Dafupi (Pericarpium Arecae) (*Zhizhi Fang*).
Black leprosy and wind sores: Use Dafuzi (Fruit of Areca Catechu), either fresh or dried. Keep the whole peel intact without damage. Soak in one sheng of wine, slowly boil until dry, grind into powder, and mix with lard from the twelfth lunar month to apply externally (*Shengji Zonglu*).
