(Li Shizhen stated: It is acceptable not to include these items in the old catalog; however, including them serves to preserve ancient textual relics and also demonstrates the confusion inherent in the Three Grades classification system. Therefore, one need not rigidly adhere to ancient methods.
The total number of new and old medicinal substances amounts to 1,082 species.
Among them, 360 species are from *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) (indicated by white characters);
182 species are from *Mingyi Bielu* (Record of Famous Physicians) (indicated by black characters);
114 species were previously appended in *Tang Bencao* (Tang Materia Medica);
133 species are newly appended here (those appended in *Kaibao Bencao* (Kaibao Materia Medica));
194 species are classified as "Known but Unused," of which 82 are newly supplemented;
17 species are newly determined (all above were established by the Song Dynasty's *Jiayou Bencao* (Jiayou Materia Medica));
488 species are remnants left by Chen Zangqi;
2 species are remnants from *Tang Bencao*;
13 species are remnants from *Haiyao Bencao* (Marine Medicine Materia Medica);
8 species are remnants from *Shiliao Bencao* (Dietary Therapy Materia Medica);
100 species belong to categories outside *Tujing Bencao* (Illustrated Classic), (all above were successively collected and supplemented by Tang Shenwei).
