Li Shizhen stated: Su Dongpo, in his *Liang Fang* (Good Prescriptions), recorded that the deer is a Yang animal, shedding its antlers when exposed to Yin; the elk is a Yin animal, shedding its antlers when exposed to Yang. Therefore, for tonifying Yang, deer antler is superior; for tonifying Yin, elk antler is superior. Their differences are so distinct that merely stating "deer is better than elk" or "elk is better than deer" is superficial. According to this reasoning, it contradicts Shen Kuo's (courtesy name Cunzhong) assertion that "Deer Antler Velvet (*Ruxi Lu*, 鹿茸) is beneficial for tonifying Yin, while Elk Antler Velvet (*Ruxi Mi*, 麋茸) is beneficial for tonifying Yang." From a theoretical perspective...
