(Fu Yi, pronounced "Fu Yi". From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica].)
[Names] Yang (from *Gujin Zhu*).
Li Shizhen states: It is a conspecific of the White Poplar (*Populus alba*), hence the name "Yang". According to research, *Erya* records: Tangdi is Liangzi Mu. Cui Bao stated: Liangzi Mu is called "Fu Liang" in the Jiangdong region. Its leaves are round with weak petioles; even a slight breeze causes them to sway greatly, thus named "Gao Fei" (High Flyer), also known as "Du Yao" (Sole Swaying). Lu Ji's interpretation of Tangdi as Yu Li was erroneous. Yu Li is actually Changdi, not Tangdi.
[Collection and Explanation] Chen Zangqi stated: This tree grows in the valleys of Jiangnan. The trunk is massive, measuring several chi in circumference. The leaves move even without wind, and the flowers open before closing. As the *Classic of Poetry* says: "The flowers of the Tangdi, fluttering open and closed," referring to this tree. Li Shizhen stated: Liangzi Mu and White Poplar are two species of the same category. Currently, people in the South generally refer to them as White Poplar. Hence, there is a folk saying: "White poplar leaves, pulled by wind, pulled by no wind." Their medicinal efficacy is roughly similar.
Bark
[Properties and Flavor] Bitter, neutral, slightly toxic.
[Indications] Treats wind-stroke, blood stasis, and painful bi-syndrome in the legs (foot qi). Breaks down damaged blood stasis where pain is unbearable. Take the white bark, roast it over fire, soak it in wine, and ingest. Boil it together with the barks of five types of trees to rub on foot qi, killing chigger-induced skin eruptions and wind-rash itching. Burn it into ash, place it in wine to normalize the taste, and it will not spoil over time (Chen Zangqi).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: Bark of White Poplar and Liangzi Mu, when mixed with the barks of five types of trees and boiled, can be used for soaking and rubbing to treat injuries, bi-syndrome, and various swellings and pains. The so-called "five trees" refer to Mulberry (*Morus alba*), Locust Tree (*Robinia pseudoacacia*), Peach (*Prunus persica*), Paper Mulberry (*Broussonetia papyrifera*), and Willow (*Salix babylonica*). All possess the functions of dispelling wind and invigorating blood.
[Attached Prescriptions] One new prescription.
Leukorrhea (White Discharge) in Women: 8 liang of Liangzi Mu bark, 4 liang of Moutan Cortex (Cortex Moutan), 1 liang each of Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) and Ostreae Concha (Muli). For each use, take 1 liang, add 2 cups of wine, decoct until 1 cup remains, and take before meals. (From *Bencao Shiyi*)
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Correction] Merged into the entry for Liangzi Mu in *Xinxiu Bencao* [Newly Revised Materia Medica].
[Names] Liangzi Mu (pronounced "Liang").
Li Shizhen stated: Its timber resembles Pine (*Pinus*), and its trunk resembles Poplar (*Populus*), hence the name Songyang (Pine-Poplar). *Erya* states: "Liang" means "Lai" (to come/arrive). Its shade provides coolness, hence called Liangmu.
Chen Zangqi stated: People in Jiangxi call it Liangmu. Songyang County derived its name from this.
[Collection and Explanation] Chen Zangqi stated: Songyang grows among the forests of Jiangnan. It is a large tree with leaves resembling those of the Pear tree (*Pyrus*).
Su Song recorded: Liangzi Mu has leaves resembling Persimmon (*Diospyros kaki*), growing in opposite pairs. The fruit is small, round, like the cow plum, green when raw and black when ripe. Its wood is hard and heavy; the decoction is red in color. Guo Pu stated: Liang timber is suitable for making wheel spokes. Harvest the wood in August and September, dry it, and use.
