(Superior Grade in *Shennong Bencao Jing*)
[Correction] Integrated Huaihua (Sophorae Flos) and Huaijiao (Sophorae Gum) into this section.
[Names] Huai (pronounced "Huai").
Li Shizhen said: According to the *Rites of Zhou*, the method for the outer court states that three Huai trees were planted facing the court, representing the seats of the Three Dukes. Wu Cheng commented: The word "Huai" means "to embrace," embracing those who come here. Wang Anshi explained: The flowers of the Huai are yellow, harboring beauty within, thus symbolizing the position of the Three Dukes. The *Chunqiu Yuanmingbao* says: "Huai" means "to return." In ancient times, lawsuits were heard under the Huai tree, so that the truth might return.
[Collection] The *Bielu* states: Huaisi (Sophorae Fructus) grows in the flat marshes of Henan. It can be used to make divine candles.
Su Song said: It is now found everywhere. The trees can grow extremely tall. According to the *Erya*, there are several types of Huai: those with large, dark leaves are called [missing character] Huai; those that close during the day and open at night are called Shouguo Huai (Styphnolobium japonicum var. pendulum); those with fine, green leaves are simply called Huai, with no difference in function. They bloom yellow flowers in April and May, and bear fruit in June and July. On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, tender fruits are harvested, crushed for juice, and boiled into a paste. Mature fruits are harvested in October for medicinal use. Bark and roots can be harvested at any time. Physicians use them most frequently.
Li Shizhen said: When growing, five days after the late spring season, the buds resemble rabbit eyes; ten days later, they resemble mouse ears; after another ten days, they begin to round; twenty days later, the leaves form. The young shoots, when cooked, can be washed with water and eaten, or made into a drink to replace tea. Alternatively, Sophorae Fructus can be sown in vegetable plots, and the seedlings harvested for food, which is also good. The wood is hard and heavy, coming in green, yellow, white, and black colors. Before blooming, the flowers resemble rice grains; after frying, decocting them dyes water a very bright yellow. The fruits are pods like linked pearls, containing black seeds; those with many connected seeds are preferred. The *Rites of Zhou*: In autumn, fire from Huai and Tan wood is taken. The *Huainanzi*: Old Huai wood generates fire. The *Tianxuan Zhuwubu* says: Old Huai wood generates cinnabar. The miraculous nature of the Huai tree is such.
Sophorae Fructus (Huaisi)
[Preparation] Lei Xiao said: Upon harvesting, discard single seeds and those with five seeds; only take those with two or three connected seeds. Crush them with a copper hammer, soak in black ox milk overnight, steam, and then use.
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, cold, non-toxic.
The *Bielu* adds: Sour, salty. Xu Zhicai stated: Jingtian (Sedum aizoon) acts as its guide drug.
[Indications] Heat from pathogenic qi in the five zang organs; stops salivation and spittle; repairs severe injuries; treats fire burns; treats breast masses in women; treats acute pain in the uterus (*Shennong Bencao Jing*). Long-term use brightens the eyes, boosts qi, prevents graying of hair, and prolongs life.
