(From *Bencao Shayi* / Supplement to Materia Medica)
【Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)】 Li Shizhen stated: Ancient mianxu (cotton-like padding/wadding) referred to the tangled, extended silk threads from cocoons that were unsuitable for weaving. Modern mianxu mostly refers to kapok or cotton. For medicinal use, silk wadding is still employed.
【Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)】 Xin mian (New silk wadding): Burned to ash, it treats "Wu Yeji Bing" (a chronic wasting disease characterized by emaciation of the neck resembling a wild pheasant). Each dose is taken with two qian of wine. Gu mianxu (Old wadding from clothing): It primarily treats lower bleeding and persistent hemorrhage from metal-induced wounds (Jinchuang). A handful is boiled in water, and the juice is consumed (attributed to Chen Cangqi). Mian hui (Ash of silk wadding): It treats hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), lower bleeding, menorrhagia (profuse uterine bleeding outside the menstrual period), leukorrhea (red and white vaginal discharge), gan chuang (pediatric malnutrition-related sores), omphalitis (umbilical sores), and otorrhea (discharge from the ear) (supplemented by Li Shizhen).
【Fu Fang (Attached Prescriptions)】 Ten new prescriptions.
Huoluan Zhuanjin Fuzhong (Cholera with muscle cramps and abdominal pain): Boil wadding in vinegar and apply it as a compress (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
Tuxue Kexue (Hematemesis and hemoptysis): One liang of xin mian (burned to ash), one liang of Baijiao (white gelatin, sliced and stir-fried until yellow). Take one qian per dose, washed down with rice drink (from *Pujifang*).
Tuxue Nuxue (Hematemesis and epistaxis): High-quality silk wadding burned to ash, mixed into a paste with flour, and taken with clear wine (from *Pujifang*).
Changfeng Xiexue (Intestinal wind causing bloody diarrhea): Broken wadding (burned to ash) and Zhike (Bitter Orange fruit, bran-fried) in equal parts, with a small amount of Shexiang (Musk), ground into powder. Take one qian per dose, washed down with rice drink (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
Xue Beng Buzhi (Incessant metrorrhagia): High-quality silk wadding and human hair burned together to preserve their properties (charred but not fully carbonized), mixed with Baicaoshuang (soot from cooking pots) in equal parts, and ground into powder. Take three qian per dose, washed down with warm wine. Alternatively, add Zonghui (ash of palm fiber).
Dongyuan Formula: Use one liang each of Baimianzi (likely referring to a specific type of silk product or seed, contextually linked to silk), Lianhua Xin (Lotus Plumule), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Maohua (Foxtail Millet Flower), and Honghua (Safflower). Wrap tightly in white paper, seal firmly with yellow mud, burn to preserve properties, and grind into powder. Take one qian per dose, with a little Shexiang (Musk), taken before meals with good wine.
*Qiankun Miyun*: Use one jin of old wadding (free of dust and ash)... [Text fragment missing]. Qi jie Linbing Butong (Qi stagnation causing difficult and obstructed urination): Use four liang of high-quality silk wadding (burned to ash), half fen of Shexiang (Musk). Take two qian per dose, wash down with warm scallion-infused wine, continuing for three doses (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
Qichuang Bugan (Umbilical sore that fails to dry/heal): Burn Mianzi (silk wadding/seed) to ash and apply externally (from Fu Shi's *Huoying Fang*).
Er Chu Zhi (Otorrhea): Burn old wadding to ash, wrap in silk, and insert into the ear (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
