(Recorded in the Lower Grade of *Shennong Bencao Jing*)
[Collected Explanations] *Bielu* (Additional Records) states: Fubi grows in the Hanzhong region; it is the flower of the Vigna angularis (Adzuki bean). It is harvested in the seventh month and dried in the shade for forty days.
Tao Hongjing says: The flowers and seeds have different uses, hence they are not classified in the same grade. Physicians do not use it. I do not understand why it is named "Fubi" (Rotten Slave). *Shennong Bencao Jing* does not state that it is the bean flower, whereas *Bielu* claims so; it is uncertain whether this is correct. Currently, there is a small tree by the sea, resembling the gardenia, with many curved stems and an odor similar to rotting stench. Locals call it Fubi, which is effective in treating malaria. Soaking the bark in wine and taking it treats heart and abdominal diseases. This is likely the true substance, and this entry should be included in the Wood Category.
Su Gong says: Fubi has been traditionally identified as the flower of Pueraria lobata (Kudzu flower). Kudzu flower is superior in resolving alcohol toxicity, whereas beans have no such effect; therefore, Kudzu flower should be considered the true substance.
Meng Yuxi says: According to the *Benben* commentary: Bean flowers also have a foul odor. Taken together with Kudzu flower, one can drink without getting drunk. This aligns with *Shennong Bencao Jing*'s description of treating alcohol-related illnesses. The statements of Tao and Su are both incorrect.
Zhen Quan says: Fubi is the flower of Vigna angularis var. nipponensis (Red Adzuki bean).
Su Song says: The seaside tree, Kudzu flower, and Red Adzuki bean flower all bear the name "Fubi"; this is a case of homonyms referring to different substances.
Kou Zongshi says: Since Fubi is listed in the Grain Category, the bean flower is correct; there is no need for further debate.
Li Shizhen says: Kudzu flower has already been discussed in its own entry. Beans can promote urination, treat heat accumulation in the middle jiao, direct qi downward, and relieve thirst, which matches the therapeutic actions of Fubi. Thus, it is undoubtedly a bean flower. However, there are several varieties of beans; Zhen's *Yaoxing Lun* specifically refers to the Red Adzuki bean. For now, I will follow his view.
[Flavor and Properties] Acrid, neutral, non-toxic.
[Therapeutic Actions] Treats malaria, pathogenic factors of alternating chills and fever, dysentery, and impotence. Stops polydipsia (Xiaoke). Treats headache due to alcohol intoxication (*Shennong Bencao Jing*. *Xinjing* states: For the above symptoms, cook the flowers with fermented soybean juice and five flavors into a soup and eat it). Resolves alcohol toxicity, brightens the eyes, directs water qi downward, treats erysipelas and hot swelling in children, dissipates qi stagnation causing fullness and inability to eat; boil and consume in one meal (*Yaoxing*). Treats heat accumulation in the middle jiao and bleeding from hemorrhoids (Li Shizhen. Used in *Gehua Wan* of *Xuanming Lunfang*).
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Preventing drunkenness: Dry the flowers and leaves of Vigna angularis in the shade for one hundred days, grind into powder, and take with water using a measure of one cun bi (approx. 5-10 ml). Alternatively, add equal parts of Kudzu flower (*Qianjin Fang*).
Carbuncles and malignant swellings: Apply powder of Vigna angularis flowers externally (*Pujifang*).
