(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Collected Explanations] Chen Zangqi stated: This insect emerges from the nodes of reeds (*Phragmites communis*), resembling a small silkworm.
[Aroma and Flavor] Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] For infants who vomit after nursing and cannot retain milk in the stomach, take two insects, decoct them in water, and administer the juice orally. (Note: The original text is incomplete here; "Vomiting and regurgitation with..., is..." is truncated.)
(From *Bencao Gangmu* [Compendium of Materia Medica])
[Names] Ma Chong (Hemp Insect).
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: Cang'er Du Chong (Cocklebur Borer) grows within the stems of Xanthii Fructus (Cang'erzi, Cocklebur Fruit), resembling a small silkworm. To collect it, identify stems with large boreholes, cut off the uninfested ends, and gather abundantly. Tie them with thread and hang them under the eaves; the insects inside will survive for over a year. When used, three small insects are equivalent to one standard unit.
[Aroma and Flavor] Not recorded.
[Indications] For Ding Zhong E Du (malignant carbuncles and toxic swellings), calcine the insects until carbonized but retaining their properties, grind into powder, mix with oil, and apply topically for immediate effect. Alternatively, soak the insects to death in Sesame Oil, store them, and crush for topical application each time; this disperses toxicity instantly and is highly effective (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: Since Xanthii Fructus treats malignant carbuncles and toxic swellings, this insect shares the same efficacy. It is not found in ancient prescriptions but is frequently used in recent methods.
[Attached Prescriptions] Three new prescriptions.
All types of Ding Zhong (malignant carbuncles), unnamed toxic swellings, and malignant sores: Liu Songshi's *Jingyan Fang* [Experience Formula]: Use one insect from the stem of Artemisia annua L. (Qinghao, Annual Wormwood), along with 3-4 fen of White Plum Flesh. Pound together into a paste and apply to the affected area for immediate cure. *Shengji Zonglu* [General Records of the Sage's Helper]: Grind the insect and another ingredient equally into powder, mix with honey, and apply. Another method: Use four insects from the nodes of Xanthii stems; shortly thereafter, extract the root with fingers, and the condition will be cured.
(From *Bencao Gangmu* [Compendium of Materia Medica])
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: This is the insect found between the nodes of Qinghao (Annual Wormwood). It resembles a small silkworm and eventually transforms into a moth.
[Aroma and Flavor] Not recorded.
[Indications] For Ji Man Jing Feng (acute and chronic convulsive disorders in children). Crush the insect, mix with Cinnabar (Zhusha) and Mercury Powder (Gongfen), each 5 fen, and form pills the size of millet grains. One pill per year of age, administered with breast milk (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: It is not found in ancient prescriptions. *Baoying Ji* [Collection for Protecting Infants] uses it to treat convulsions, claiming a success rate of ten out of ten cases. A poem states: "Half Cinnabar, half Snow [referring to refined mercury or white mineral], its efficacy lies solely in the nodes of Annual Wormwood. Even if deemed dead, it can restore life; when taken, human blood must be used."
